Project idea

[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

[edit]

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Telugu-language Wikipedia as many other language Wikipedias rely on a scarce resources like not-so update help pages, few training materials created during outreach to help newbies and existing wikipedians to level up in their Wikipedia activities. In general, there is no clear reading material which can start from dummies to pro or intermediate when it comes to learning Telugu-language Wikipedia. Several outreach activities ongoing are not so fruitful due to this serious issue.

What is your solution?

[edit]

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Our solution is to create (and update exising) help pages on Telugu Wikipedia, and to create a series of audio-visual tutorials, self-help guides to editing Telugu Wikipedia. We choose this particular solution as new and growing Wikipedians can utilize online video/visual-tutorials to get started or as follow-up to outreach events, and we have up-to-date help pages for the benefit of all users.

Project goals

[edit]

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  • Creating Full-scale training materials for Telugu-language Wikipedia with hundreds of text, audio-visual and screen recording training materials for all necessary topics. Idea of this project is to create a self-help guide to Telugu Wikipedia in Telugu language to help newbies to be retained in project.
  • Train at least 50-100 New Wikipedians and 20+ existing Wikipedians using the created training material and assess effectiveness of the training materials for further improvement.
  • Creating a methodology for replicating this project, If this project becomes successful. This methodology can be adopted by other language Wikipedias and conducting an online workshop for Wikipedians interested (primarily targeting Indian-language Wikipedias) about the project.

Project impact

[edit]

How will you know if you have met your goals?

[edit]

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (e.g. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Outputs
  1. Creating pedagogic materials about 50-70 topics in Telugu-language which can be documents/wikipedia pages/videos/audios that help training users about various topics related to Wikipedia.
  2. Training 100+ new wikipedians and 20+ existing Wikipedians using the above training materials and assessing the efficiency of the training material.
  3. Conducting at least one workshop that will help other language wikipedians to understand and learn about this project and support them if they would like to adopt this project plan in their language.
  4. Every material is aimed to pass through Primary revision, feedback considered revision and a final revision.
Outcomes
  1. Full-scale training material for Telugu Wikipedia will result in better outreach and more retention in upcoming Wikipedia activities.
  2. This will help trainers who would like use this material in their outreach.
  3. Training material will help New Wikipedians who landed up on Telugu Wikipedia to learn about Wikipedia quickly and easily on their own.
  4. Similar projects will help other language Wikipedias to create their own training materials.

Do you have any goals around participation or content?

[edit]

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  1. Total Participants: 30
  2. Number of newly registered users: 100
  3. Number of content pages created or improved, across all Wikimedia projects: 50-100 (Mainly Created documents and videos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons)
  4. Number of users participated in evaluation process: 40
  5. Number of iterations or versions that were produced or improved: 3

Project plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

The overall activities will be as follows:

  • Creating a plan to identify and chart down all the necessary topics need to be covered in a full scale training material for Telugu Wikipedia.
  • Identifying how should (screen-recording/audio-visual/text) each of these topics needed to be created when creating a resource from it.
  • Creating training resources for each topic in the necessary form. (screen-recording/audio-visual/text)
  • Utilising this training resources on outreach and training sessions for relevant target group (Newbies to existing Wikipedians based on the training material)
  • Gathering feedback and finding out effectiveness of this material, analysing the room for improvement and improving the resource.
  • Creating clear action plan to get adopted by other language-communities that are interested.
  • Conducting series of online sessions about this project for the interested Indian-language communities and helping them out creating resources for their own language Wikipedias.

Preliminary Period (February–June 2021): During this 'preliminary period, we will come up with topics coverage, prioritization of topics, mode of material (visual, text, etc.), create some help material, evaluate the effectiveness of the material, make refinements as identified, and chalk out the plan for creating material for all the topics.

We will hire a coordinator to make sure steady progress is being made. We will set up a volunteer project committee to review, monitor and guide the progress of the project. We will have to contract works like video production to professionals.

Preliminary phase is also being used as a research phase. Coordinator is:

  • Mapping existing help content and other training materials on Telugu Wikipedia and other training platforms such as Program and Events Dashboard. Finding out gaps in help content, outdated content in training materials, etc., and making a list that would locally relevant for Telugu Wikipedia. Some of the progress can be seen in this page: Index of help pages and mapping issues & gaps in Telugu Wikipedia.
  • Researching and mapping materials created by other affiliates and projects in Wikimedia movement and creating a plan about what can be used and what needs to be improved, etc.,
  • Researching similar models already well built in external projects where companies/projects tried to create extensive help content for their users and structured them well. We will take those models into account along with existing Wikimedia examples. For example: Youtube help is structured in a simple and clear fashion with 100s of small help pages, resources, videos and other help material can be explored without any confusion.

During this period, we are working with support from CIS-A2K project.

Excecution Period: During this period, we would have made a sizable progress through at least the P1 priority topics. We will introduce these materials in outreach events, and with institutions like IIIT-Hyderabad that are helping bring more editors. Every material is will have at least 3 revisions: Primary revision, feedback considered revision and a final revision. Feedback that will be incorporated will come from evaluation that will be conducted.

Evaluation and Scaling out: We will evaluate the progress made and effectivess of the help material created. In this phase, we will also explore way to scale the effort out to within Telugu Wikipedia and to other Indian language Wikipedias.

We will create 2 focus groups formed from already trained participants and evaluate efficiency of content created using an evaluation methodology. This will be either adopted from other users groups/chapters that already did similar projects or will be developed by the team if needed. Focus group 1 contains 30 new wikipedians trained and focus group 2 will have 10 existing wikipedians trained using the material. Evaluation consists of tasks, quiz, and survey. After evaluation, we will integrate feedback into the process and improve training materials based on that.

COVID-19 planning

[edit]
  • Our major activities are tied to creation of online training resources and the project plan can work out even without any offline activities. We can complete the core components of the project without major travel or offline event if necessary based on Covid-19 situation in India at that point of time.
  • All of our outreach can be done online and we can assess impact of material created via online training activities.
  • We have reviewed our plan according to Risk assessment during COVID-19 guidelines and will stick to them.

Community engagement

[edit]

Community input and participation helps make projects successful. How will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve during your project?
This problem, solution, and process was thoroughly discussed in Telugu Wikipedia Village pump and committee comprises of active users from Telugu Wikipedia Community. Team of this project would constantly communicate and update to Telugu Wikipedia Community in it's village pump primarily and update in project page created in Telugu Wikipedia. We shall use Wikimediaindia-l mailing list to communicate about methodology that would be produced and workshop conducted for broader communities.
