Proposal
[edit]1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?
- What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this?
Wiki Sound Audio Speaks Campaign is design to become an international Wikimedia campaign across all Wikimedia Sister Projects and Language Wikipedias, focusing on massive contribution of Audio Files worth encyclopedic for ease accessibility of free knowledge sharing and acquiring knowledge through the use of audio files across different Wikimedia pages. This campaign is designed to provide free knowledgeable audio files in different languages into Wikimedia Commons, by onboarding new audio conten volunteers and engaging existing ones, also by having different language mentors and ambassadors that will help in contributing with audio files in their languages, the project plan to couch editors and participants how to convert, upload and link various audio files in different Language Wikis, the audios that will be in good accent of that language from a native speakers.
As well as to increase the number of audio files in Wikimedia Commons and to be making use of those audio files in various Wikimedia projects especially language projects like (Wikipedias and Wikitionaries). Almost all Wikimedia pages needs audio files of different content, some pages needs local language pronunciation, oral explanation, religious educational recitations and different sounds in articles or words, this is to help readers and knowledge seekers to understand how the word/article/language is spoken natively and accurately.
- How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?
We have the technical skills of converting audio files, and uploading audio files into Wikimedia Commons, We then realized that there are many articles that needs audio files and there so many words needing audio files pronunciations, so We create those audio files, and We linked them to relevant Wikimedia pages in English Wikipedia, Wikitionaries, Wikidata and Hausa Wikipedia.
Later on We now learned that we have to create ways to have massive audio files in different languages through mentoring existing editors on how to create audio files, convert, upload into Commons and linked those audio files to different Wikimedia pages. Previously, We have successfully carried out a Wikimedia Foundation project under rapid grants, the project is dealing with audio files in Wikimedia Commons here], it is during that time that We realized that many articles and words needs audio files. Almost many pages in every language Wikitionary needs pronunciation natively, some pages in other wiki are created native of another language, for instance an old Hausa book known as en:Magana Jari Ce exist in English Wikipedia written by en:Abubakar Imam, the article of such book needs audio pronunciation been a Hausa word, the entire name of the book are Hausa group of words that form a sentence, so pronunciation of such book is extremely needed. Also words in every language dictionaries require audio files, through the above project that We carried, with the help of other editors in Hausa Wikitionary, we have successfully contribute a lot in providing words pronunciation to many words in Hausa Wikitionary, which can be seen in Hausa Wikitionary.
2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?
This campaign is designed to bring a progressive development in respect to uploading audio files into Wikimedia Commons, and such can not be achieve unless editors have full techical experience of how to upload audio files into Wikimedia Commons. We want interested Wikimedians to take part in promoting audio and sound Wikimedia activities in Wikimedia Commons and in Wikimedia projects towards 2030 to take Wikimedia Pages to the miles stone. There are several areas of participation and mentoring in this campaign, such as onboarding ambassador/mentor both native language speakers and technicians. Please see the https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiSound_Audio_Speaks_Campaign and take a look at Strategic Plans and How you can help section for better understanding. So the changes we wanted to see is as follow
- To create international campaign and awareness in Wikimedia world and social media handless on the importance of using audio files in Wikimedia Movement at large, for the general public to understand the importance of audio in contributing to free knowledge sharing.
- To train Wikimedians and audio engineers how to contribute with audio files into Wikimedia Commons and make use of it worth encyclopedic.
- We wanted to see that all words in every language Wikitionaries have audio files pronunciation from native speakers, this is to allow understanding of oral language accent.
- We will create tools that will help editors deal with audio files conversations to .ogg and .aac extension format for ease technical activities.
- We will create video tutorials on how to convert audio files, upload to Wikimedia Commons and linked files.
- We wanted to see the change that International contest and local contest will be organize to motivate audio files contributors within the Wikimedia ecosystem.
- We wanted see that we have at least 2 or more mentors and ambassador from every local languages communities that will be mentoring their communities on the activities of audio files, such will boost audio activities.
The above mentioned is important to help in free knowledge sharing, build User experience and improve audio files in Commons, and to have audio files supporting oral language knowledge documentation in form of audio.
3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
- Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes?
It is fully described under Strategic Plan in WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign Page in Meta.
The first move is to start by making general promotional campaign and awareness across all Wikimedia Projects about WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign and the importance of audio files in Wikimedia Movement at large, it is through this campaign editors will show interest in participating by learning and teaching other editors what audio files is all about. Through this, the campaign will get to have mentors and local Language Organizers that will be part of team of WikiSound audio Speaks Campaign, and that will surely be the foundation to start laying the activities. It is part of the plan to have two mentors/local Language Organizers from every Wikimedia Community that are native of that language, the Mentors/local Organizers will volunteer in couching editors, enrollments of audio editors and engaging existing editors from their Community and other community. Part of the plan is to be having WikiSound audio event (workshops and Edith-a-thon), as well as organizing International Contest and local contest on Audio files, just like how Wiki Loves Africa is contributing with huge number of photos and images, we do believe that audio files will over take the number of images before 2030. Furthermore, mentors and Organizers are encourage to apply for rapid funding applications in carrying out these great mission. Below are some of the plans in summary; Make international awareness across all Wikimedia Projects. Admit two mentors/organizers from each Wikimedia Community.
- Call for application for Wikimedia Foundation's funding request for local events to Progression.
- Organizing local Meet-ups and international Meet-ups on Audio files.
- Mentoring Wikimedians and editors on the activities of audio files.
- Organizing contest (international and local) for encouragement.
- Creating tools and application that will help in doing the task of audio files.
- Collaboration with Individuals, Groups and User Groups to achieve oral language documentation base on each their mandates.
- Organizing workshops, edit-a-thon and seminar on audio files in Wikimedia Commons.
- Creating video tutorials on audio files for better experience and understanding.
3a and why you think they will be effective?
This approaches or strategieswill be effective because of the following plans we intend to carry.
- Many users will learn how to convert audio files, because audio files has to be converted before uploading into Wikimedia Commons.
- Audio files will be use worh encyclopedic in Wikipedias and Wikitionaries.
- We will engage Individuals, Groups and Users Groups to become mentors of Audio mission.
4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
The following are the listed strategies and approaches we have in mind that help us achieve this mega project;
- Activities for strategy 1 We will start by creating promotional campaigns acrosss all Wikimedia projects both on on Wiki and offline, as well as through social media handles using fliers, links, video campaign and PDFs, the camping will draw the attention of the general public and Wikimedians that has the passion of contributing with audio files in Wikimedia projects at large.
- Activities for strategy 2: Audio Content generation, Technical capacity building and volunteer recruitment of audio files volunteers/mentors and ambassadors.
We would be organizing two different monthly events, one is going to be in-person and other one is online for other Wikimedians that are far away from us, as the project focus is scheduled to be International. online technical audio conversation skills and upload editing and capacity building workshops (10 in total) in strategic locations to both improve audio skills and create new audio content and also teach and onboard both newcomers. In addition, to strengthen the skills of existing editors and nurture experienced editors to develop more bond with the community, become more productive and potential facilitators for our programs to increase the overall health of the WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign community. Activities for strategy 2: Create promotional videos that help in making both online and offline campaign. Also a event videos will be created to help in passing experience to the upcoming projects like this.
- Activities for strategy 3: International contest will be organize to support and motivate editors in contributing with audio files alone, as well local contest will be held to motivate local language audio editors. Moreover, Wikimedia Pages Wanting Audio will be implemented in providing audio files into Wikimedia commons specifically for linking into various pages. For this very huge strategic plan, training and video tutorials will be created.
- Activities for strategy 4:We will also conduct an oral language research to find out how languages are spoken and communicated among languages, varieties, accent, evaluations, changes and changes in accent, this will help us determined how to provide audio files accordingly, what pages should we improve with audio files, how to do that and what kind of native people do we need.
- Activities for strategy 5: We will also work effectively to make sure we taught participants and editors how to convert, upload and link files in relevant Wikimedia pages, through online Edith a thon, Workshops, training and mentorship programs.

Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language, Digital Access
11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?
We will leverage our meta page and social media channels which have growing followings and user engagement. We will primarily engage the audience through good and eye-catching graphic design and social media content. We will, additionally, utilize our existing personal and organizational network to reach out to universities and other cultural institutions for collaboration to spread our mission, expand reach and draw potential editors and Wikimedia contributors. Locations for our physical events would also be strategically selected to give room for diversity and spread so as to pull interested people with little to no awareness of Wikimedia projects from different parts of our focus region.

We have worked closely with other Wikimedia communities in organizing various activities and we hope to expand the area of collaborations and scope of partnerships in the year 2023 to increase our reach and evolve our community. In the past, we worked with Hausa Wikimedians User Group. In 2022 we collaborated with them in organizing the Wikimania 2022 watch parties and meetups. We also work with TheWikiVibrance communities in mentoring editors in specific areas of audio files in Wikimedia Commons, as well as working with different individuals across Nigeria in developing Wikimedia projects like Afrocine and WikiGap
14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?
No
14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.
N/A
15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?
By the successful completion of this project we will hope to expand and continue the work started in this project through active collaboration with our current and potential partners and also another Wikimedia General Support fund for the next fiscal year, as for this years program is more of making promotions, awareness, trainings and workshops. Also we work tirelessly to make connections with Users Groups, co founders, local community leaders, experienced editor and sound engineers, to ensure that this project is expanded accordingly.
We will also implement tools and applications that will help in creating audios and making conversations easily and effectively.
16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.
- We anticipate the issue of oral language documentation, care has to be taken in ensuring that audios that will be produced are potentially possessed by editors having the absolute right release of that files without using other peoples work. Moreover, music and songs can be uploaded as part of this projects, and it has to be absolutely free from its original source. As the plan may be, we planned to make sure that participants are well familiar with release rights, public domain rights release and audio that are from free sources. As well as to know what type of audio is not required in Wikimedia Commons. We anticipate to have issues with editors uploading contents they don’t possessed, as newcomers always have issues with copyright violations issues both on wiki and off wiki.
17. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of three options that most apply.
Improve User Experience, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, Manage Internal Knowledge, Innovate in Free Knowledge
18. Please state if your organization or group has a Strategic Plan that can help us further understand your proposal. You can also upload it here.

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation
[edit]19. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?
At the evaluation point of the project we would like to understand the most effective community building strategy for productive growth of sound creation and also to identify activities and approaches that are of high impact in helping to achieve our overall vision.
We would like to identify, and learn from activities that work well in increasing the number of committed volunteers and in nurturing skilled trainers that can help expand the number of our facilitators and project-specific experts. Moreover, we would learn how to develop effective relationships with mentors and sound ambassadors across local wikis.
Additionally, we would like to understand the impact or success of our programs, the audio files uploaded and linked, in what wiki and what has it been used, how many participants do we have in each community, as such will help us to know better on which wiki are to focus more on. on the participants and overall community members as well. We would like to learn the challenges too, and effective ways of tackling them. In our special approach for complete newcomers, we would like to develop activities and programs that are both engaging and fun and at the same time allow people to learn the ropes of contributing with audio files in an easy way and accelerate the timeframe needed for the newcomers to assimilate the community’s and Wikipedia’s values as well as editing community’s guidelines and etiquettes.
We would also hope to learn the approaches that work best in retaining existing active and expert contributors and working hand in hand with them in helping to onboard newcomers and also in contributing the required audio files during our editing programs with people that are new.

22. What tools would you use to measure each metric selected?
We will employ variety of tools to measure metrics in the course of implementing this project. Particularly for edit-athons/editing and related programs we will make use of the Wikimedia Outreach Dashboard and Wikimedia Event Metrics to create and manage events participants and organizers under the specific campaign. These tools will allow us to gather statistics and follow programs progress and evaluate impact eventually. For campaigns and contests that employ use of hashtag, we will utilize the Hashtag tool to track and measure the progress and impact of the campaign. We may additionally utilize Google and Microsoft forms to gather necessary data about participants that may be used to identify attendees, make customized gifts, or for other logistics reasons as the case may be; we may also use the same services to collect survey responses for gauging impact and/or impression during or after our programs as the need arises. Other details and metrics may be collected manually and shared online with Google Doc/Sheet services or on wiki pages on Meta-Wiki as the situation warrants.
