There are a few different changes that we want to bring: Content gap about LGBT+ subjects: There is a lot that can be done regarding the quality and quantity of LGBT+ topics on Wikimedia projects, particularly in the local-language Wikipedias of some CEE countries. Our project will tackle this issue by hosting events to increase contributions in LGBT+ topics, and of international collaboration to ensure sustainability, synchronization and cross-development of relevant subjects. We also want to document EuroPride in an open culture context so that Wikipedia can benefit from all of the events within the conferences and events.
Increasing LGBT+ participation on Wikimedia projects:
Our project will be a powerful way of introducing Wikimedia to LGBT+ people and of the retention of current LGBT+ contributors.
Spreading open culture and Wikimedia related awareness in LGBT+ communities:
Presenting our own LGBT+ related Wikimedia work to activists and academics at the pride conference will allow us to form connections with the most active parts of the LGBT+ community and to involve them in Wikimedia related projects. It will also help us show Wikimedia’s potential in being a force for social progress.
Increasing local and international engagement in LGBT+ subjects:
For many countries within the CEE area, due to the prevalence of authoritarian administrations and their adoption of anti-gender policies or dont-ask-dont-tell practices, LGBT+ visibility is repressed.
A way out of this is online activism, which our project will foster. This is also one of the few chances that many of the potential participants will be able to attend a pride event without risk of government interference. These will all help in creating a community through solidarity and to utilize the creativity of participants freely. There will also be opportunities for the participants to share information with each other, which will improve LGBT+ related Wikimedia engagement about different countries on different Wikipedias, and on multilingual projects such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
