What is your organization or group's mission?

Our mission is to help groom the skills and talents of Ghanaian youths through volunteerism. By empowering them to lead and contribute to open source projects like Wikipedia, we provide a platform and opportunities for them to apply the knowledge they acquired from schools. We also equip them with skills, knowledge, and experiences that could be of so much benefit to them career-wise.

If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has. (optional)

If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

What are the main challenges you are trying to solve and your proposed solution?

We held a pilot event at the main library in Winneba. Which was attended by 13 librarians who were interested in having more of such events. Through this event we discovered that there are librarians in libraries in Ghana that lack digital literacy skills and hence are not able to be of much assistance to library visitors.

We also discovered that, libraries are not being patronised by the youth that much. So to make libraries more useful to Ghanaians, the Global Open Initiative Foundation and the Ghana Library Authority decided to work together to equip librarians with digital literacy skills by organising Wikipedia and Wikidata training events in libraries in the Central Region. Also, to attract more visitors to the libraries, the Ghana Library Authority will promote Wikipedia and Wikidata training events happening in libraries on their various social media platforms.

Moreover, having a community of editors and partners that are not continuously engaged could lead to the disinterest of some members who end up leaving. For the year 2020/2021 through our Wikimedia activities, we established partnerships with several institutions including Nubuke Foundation, Accra Archive, Ghana Library Authority (Effutu Municipality), Dallung Community Library, Jisonayili Community Library and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Ghana. To strengthen our alliances with these institutions so we can continue to achieve our goal of contributing valuable content and recruiting editors on the various Wikimedia projects, we want to continue our work with these institutions. So for the year 2022, working hand in hand with these institutions, we hope to undertake the following:

1. GOIF and Nubuke Editing meetups: Work with Nubuke Foundation team to improve content about Artists on Wikipedia and Wikidata.

2. GOIF and Ghana Library Authority(GLA) Wikipedia and Wikidata training workshops and contests: The Ghana Library Authority is the institution that manages all libraries in Ghana. We will work with Ghana Library Authority to organise Wikipedia and Wikidata training workshops in libraries across the regions in Ghana.

3. Twi Community Editing meetups and contests.

What is the main objective of your proposal?

By December 2022, we would have created and improved over thousand pages on Twi Wikipedia, English Wikipedia and Wikidata. We would have also trained sixty librarians and formed partnerships with four other libraries as well.

Describe your main strategies to achieve this objective and the main activities you will be developing as part of these strategies.

GOIF+Nubuke Foundation Edit-a-thons:

Ever since the beginning of 2020, most of the GOIF community meetups have been online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that physical events are allowed, we have partnered with the Nubuke Foundation who are interested in working with us to improve content about Ghanaian artists. It was agreed that Nubuke will allow the GOIF team to use its space for organising Wikipedia and Wikidata editing meetups on every last Saturday of the month.

Every meeting day, we will create at least five pages with the participants. After every meeting each participant will be given an article to work on before the next meeting day, the next month. In total, about 10 pages should be created in a month. Based on these figures, we will be able to complete about 60 pages in 6 months.

GOIF+Ghana Library Authority Wikidata/Wikipedia workshops: We can achieve Ghana Library Authority’s goal of connecting every Ghanaian with knowledge resources to attain our shared goal of improving the literacy and skills of all Ghanaians. But first, we have to make libraries more useful, attractive and accessible to Ghanaians. And to do this, the Global Open Initiative Foundation which has a lot of experience in organising Wikipedia training events, has partnered with the Ghana Library Authority (Effutu Municipality), which manages all national libraries in the municipality, to organise Wikipedia training workshops in Libraries across the country.

We have successfully organised Wikipedia and Wikidata training workshops at the main GLA library in Winneba, Dallung Community Library, Jisonayili Community Library and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Ghana. We want to continuously engage the librarians recruited in these libraries and also train new librarians to become editors on Wikidata and Wikipedia. So we will organise at least one Wikidata editing workshop at each of the libraries that we worked with before. The type of content which will be created and improved will vary from one institution to the other. By completion of this project we will train 60 librarians and establish partnership with 4 new libraries.

Twi Community Transla-ta-thons and Contests: The Twi community which focuses on creating content and recruiting editors on Twi Wikipedia mostly organise editing meetups and contests to continuously engage their members. For the year 2022 the community hopes to have organised 4 translation meetups and 4 contests.
