Wiki Loves Monuments SK 2012

WMSK get partner for WLM SK 2012 - Slovak Institute of Monuments (PUSR). Project costs are travel to PUSR to agree the partnership and to get a prizes and post cost for sending of prizes to winners.

Administration and office

Address of residence of Wikimedia Slovakia was home address of one of our co-founders but she abdicated and didn't want to provide an address any more. So we needed to change the address. During first generally assembly number of members take note about badly defined parts of our bylaw. In result we was obligated to change bylaw. That was on 9th September 2012. Another costs are about registering new version and country ID for organisations.

During existence of WMSK we needed miscellaneous basic office supplies.

We have prepared business cards for members of our board.

Travel
  • Organisational meeting 9.8.2012 - preparation of new projects (i.e. Grants:Wikimedia Slovakia/Wikipedia workshop within KAEST), general plans
  • Generally assemblies - 3 GAs (president)
  • Wikipedia contest Day of financial literacy - personal meeting with partner
  • Wikimedia Conference 2013 - supplement for part of travel which wasn't reimbursed during the conference (bus from conference etc)
  • seminar about author law - as result was the next speak
  • speak for teachers 9.5.2013 - cca 50 teachers of basic and hight schools

Wiki Loves Monuments SK 2013

[edit]
Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in Slovakia brought 2 729 pictures to Commons (358% increase from 2012). They were taken by 76 photographers (262% increase from 2012). A big part of the project was the award ceremony. It took place on 25 January 2014 at Progressbar. Six of the ten winners and their family members and friends attended, 19 people in total. We presented Wiki Loves Monuments, Wikimedia SK and Wikimania. Pictures from the event be seen in this Commons Category. A blog post (in Slovak) can be read here.
As a side effect we have received contacts to interested photographers, what was used e.g. for WMPL’s photo expedition Industriada 2014.

Future projects

[edit]
  • Wikipedia competition:
    • WMSK was engaged in making of rules, election of articles to participate, election of jury, election of prizes, informing (global banner), creation of on-wiki page, helping to participants, informing winners and local Wikipedia community. Preparation lasted several months, one meeting in person took place.
    • the competition was repeated in 2014
  • Outreach
    • printing pens with logo of Slovak Wikipedia and dissemination during meeting, speaks, conferences
    • making business cards for our activists
  • Administration (2% of taxes)
    • on Slovak Wikipedia was created infopage, overview of activity and the page was modified to be nicer
    • informing about the possibility to donate was spreeded on our social sites and slovak Wikipedia
    • some routine administrative was needed (about 3 hours of work)
    • for 2% of taxes WMSK applies also in 2015; the money used for this was directly from 2% from 2014
  • Travel
    • travel to speaks leaded by WMSK or with WMSK as participant, see Wikimedia Slovakia/Reports/2013#Others
    • travel to partners for competition "Day of financial literacy with Wikipedia 2014" (following succes of the last year competition)
    • conference of non-formal education in Slovakia "Ways to good school" (30.5.2014)
    • in-Slovakia part of travel to Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2014

Additional activities

[edit]
Wiki Loves Monuments SK 2014 was organised as succeeding projects of this grant, but funded directly by WMSK.

Lessons learned

[edit]
What worked well?
Particular parts (WLM SK, 2% from taxes) was a big succes. We have received support from Slovak wiki community, collabouration with partners was mostly without problems, we are much more financialy independent.
What didn't work?
Publishing of materials and projects with need to communication to huge number of people wasn’t very succesful. We had problems to organise everything by ourselfs and to find new vovolunteers to help with organizing, we are in delegation trap. Even activity of base project team varied during implementation period due to working in another organisations (e.g. WUG ELiSo, E@I) and personal affairs.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
We would avoid organising several big projects in the same time.
Measures of succes was defined too vague, I would add some concrete numbers.
I would consider to split some specific parts of the grant (e.g. reimbursting travel costs for Commons photographers) into separate grant. But it need to be in balance with testing character of the whole grant.

Outcomes and impact

[edit]

Outcomes

[edit]
Provide the original project goal here.
This grant request is roofing some different projects and needs of us. First goal is to reimburse our costs during first year of WMSK, when we hadn't a proper bank account. Second goal is to make financial basement for our already existing projects (see below). Third goal is to test new projects (see below).
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
As the project consist of 3 different parts there are 3 results.
Reimbursing past costs was simple reimbursing and it was succesful.
WLM SK 2013 achieved its goal. It took place, there was significantly more photos and photographers, organisation was much better than in 2012. It was succeded even in 2014 (outside of this project scope).
In part of “future projects” was project goal achieved partly. Some projects was canceled because of changed curcimstancies (see below), one wasn’t implemented. Another parts ranges from partial to full succes and receiving new information for estimating future budgets. WMSK is going to have a generally assembly with day long organisation developing session on end of March and these data will be good starting point for discussions and planing.

Progress towards targets and goals

Wiki Loves Monuments 2013

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
amount of photographers participated 76 it is an increase of 262% in comparation to WLM SK 2012
amount of photos uploaded 2 729 it is an increase of 358% in comparation to WLM SK 2012
media coverage 13 published news about WLM SK 2013 including Slovak Press Agency especially in comparation to WLM SK 2012 (test year) it is great success; we only didn’t managed to publish a press release to local press about local winners

Thematic Wikipedia contest

sk:Wikipédia:Deň finančnej gramotnosti/2013

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
amount of new editors participated 24 it is about 2 times more new editors as estimated
amount of existing editors participated 14 it is about 2 times more new editors as estimated
added new content in sum 33 new articles; 14 improved articles amount is near to estimates, but quality was little lower than estimated; however it was suficient for the contest partner for linking to the articles from their website

Outreach

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
proposals for collaboration from another organisations we have received couple of invitations for speaks to schools and NGO, there was primal interest for more speaks and content liberation but finally without implementing them
new editors 30 as measure number of recaptured editor from general public for all our activities is very hard, it was used the same number as for Global meatrics
more trust in wiki projects amid Slovak public On personal meetings participants asserted to have more trust in wiki projects; from our outreach activities arrised number of articles in (especially internet) medias with very laud content as measure trust of general public is very hard, considering personal feedback and tone of media coverage, we can see more trust of this particular sample of people

Reimbursement of travel costs for Commons photographers

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
proof if the project fit for us additional worker was needed this project didn’t worked well; it hasn’t deadline and was pushed to future by urgent projects (and personal affairs) until end of implementation period
amount of new photos on Commons 0 project not lunched
amount of newly shoted objects on Commons 0 project not lunched

GLAM activities

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
proof if the project fit for us the project was canceled the original idea was to test scaning and OCR-ing libre books for Wikisource and Commons; than we found project of Slovak National Library with the same scope in much much bigger extent (scaning, OCR-ing and publishing of nearly whole Slovak literature) so we decided not to concurence them but use their outcomes instead

Global Metrics

[edit]

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation
1. # of active editors involved ~30 calculating users in writing competition and on-wiki helping; was difficulities to calculate active editors in WLM and in on-wiki helping
2. # of new editors 30 calculating new users in writing competition and organisation contacting; was difficulities to calculate new editors in WLM
3. # of individuals involved ~ 480 including participants on speaks and presentations
4. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages 3 487
5. # of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects 49 new articles, 17 improved
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects 7 772 MB not including WLM SK 2014 (it was only cuccesor of this project but funded from another source)
Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
Based on personal meetings with editors (e.g. WLM prizegiving ceremony), feedback from winners after competition, wilingness of financial support of WMSK and invitations for speaks I consider increased motivation.

Impact

[edit]

What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?

Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects?

Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects?

By 2 years of Wiki Loves Monuments SK directly funded by this project (and 1 year as succeeder funded by other source) we have enriched Commons by many photos of cultural monuments which was then used in Wikipedias in lists of monuments and other articles. 2 years of article writing contest bring new articles and improoved existing ones.

Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects?
