Wikicology/Wiki Yoruba Workshop
We plan to organize a 3-days workshop for 30 Yoruba language students and 5 Yoruba language academics at Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, Nigeria.

English language is the official language in Nigeria but the Yoruba language constitutes one of the major languages in Nigeria. The other two languages are Igbo and Hausa. Today, Yorubas along with the Igbos are the most educated ethnic groups in Africa but in spite of this potentials, there are poor readership level and contributions to the Yoruba Wikipedia projects. In fact, several existing and prospective Wikipedia editors as well as scholars and student who can contribute significantly to the project are not even aware of the existence of the Yoruba Wikipedia. This workshop will involve hands-on training on how to become an invaluable contributors to Wikipedia projects.

The workshop aims to increase the number of contributors to Yoruba Wikipedia. It will also bring an improvement to hundreds of existing articles. Our basic policies, guidelines and essays need to be translated into Yoruba. This workshop will help to recruit editors that can help with translation, content creation and community building.

Goal

[edit]
  • To recruit long-term and valuable editors
  • To create awareness of the Yoruba Wikipedia project
  • To improve existing articles
  • recruit volunteers that will help with content translation.

Plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

The workshop will start on 22 March 2016 and ends on 24 March 2016. My team of volunteer Yoruba speaking Wikipedians will arrive at the university on 21 March 2016 and we will return to our various homes on 25 March 2016. Certificate of achievement or completion will be issued to students and scholars that fully participate in the workshop. They may want to reference that certificate on their CV. At least 20 students will participate fully. At the end of the workshop, my team will provide online mentorship to all the participant for at least 2 months.

Impact

[edit]

Target readership

[edit]
  • Yoruba Wikipedia

Fit with strategy

[edit]

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.

  • Increasing participation: The project will result in increasing number of long-term editors/volunteers that will help with content translation, content creation, maintenance and community building.
  • Increasing quality: Significant number of policies/guidelines will be translated from English to Yoruba, therefore creating a foundation to support all later editors not only workshop participants. New articles will be created and existing ones will be improved. The project will build not just articles but also Yoruba community/wikipedia infrastructure.

Measures of success

[edit]

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

  • At least 25 people will attend the workshop.
  • At least 20 new articles will be added to Yoruba Wikipedia
  • At least 10 new editors will continue to edit or contribute to Yoruba Wikipedia at the end of the program
  • At least 2 Yoruba scholars will continue to edit after the program
  • At least 5 GA articles on the English Wikipedia will be translated to Yoruba
  • At least 3 FA articles on the English Wikipedia will be translated to Yoruba
  • Significant number of policies/guidelines will be translated from English to Yoruba. At least 5 policies, guidelines and essays will be translated

Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Resources and risks

[edit]

Resources

Volunteer Wikipedians
(Sumtotal : 196,950 NGN)
1 Transportation for volunteers 1 7000 (each) x4 28000 140.70 Traveling scholarship for experienced Wikimedian. The volunteer experienced Wikipedians live in different states in Nigeria. User:Jamie Tubers lives in Kwara State, User:OluwaCurtis is currently in Oyo State, I and User:Olaniyan Olushola lives in Lagos State.
2 Hotel Accommodation 4 6500 (each) x4 104,000 522.61 This will cover the Wikimedians's hotel accommodation for 4 days (from 21th - 25th). The Wikimedians live in different states of not less than 5 to 6 hours drive from their respective home. Hence the need to lodge them for the number of days they will stay for the workshop. 4 Certificate of participation 30 500 15000 50.23 This will be issued as a certificate of achievement or completion to students that fully participate in the workshop and contest. Students may want to reference that certificate on their CV. At least 20 students will participate fully.

Endorsements

[edit]

Do you think this project should be selected for a Project and Event Grant? Please add your name and rationale for endorsing this project in the list below. Other feedback, questions or concerns from community members are also highly valued, but please post them on the talk page of this proposal.

  • Looks like a well thought out pilot that's not too large in scope/scale (in a good way). I'd be eager to see what would come out of this! Tighe Flanagan (WMF) (talk) 14:49, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Support Support There are more than 30 million speakers of Yoruba and the yo.wikipedia has more than 30,000 articles. Yet almost all of them are bot created and there is no community to speak of and almost no hope to revive this language edition. Every effort should be made to promote contributing in this language - and who can be better equipped than experienced Wikipedians who speak Yoruba? The proposed project is not too big in scope and will raise awareness of yo.wikipedia. It should be supported and I hope that the humble grant request is met with approval. --Gereon K. (talk) 09:30, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Support Support as per Gereon's and Tighe's remarks above. Its a good, workable proposal and we need to support efforts in Africa.Thelmadatter (talk) 12:25, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
