Grants:PEG/Tec de Monterrey/Semana i September 2016
Goal
[edit]There are five distinct projects which will be open to about 200 students on two campuses in the Mexico City area (Campus Ciudad de México and Campus Santa Fe). The projects are
1) Interview 15 national-level artists of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana for video onto Commons. Accompanying this is an exhibition of works by members of the Salón, with blow ups of Wikipedia articles related to the artists.
2) Record up to 10 pieces of traditional (out-of-copyright) Mexican music to have freely-licensed reditions in Commons, adding the recordings, midi files and scores to appropriate projects
3) Editahon of pages in Spanish and other languages related to British and American authors of Gothic Literature from the end of the XIX century and the beginnings of the XX century.
4 & 5) Two wiki-expeditions- one to Colonias Roma and Condesa and to the Desierto de los Leones former monastery and national park.
Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]1)Contract company to do the mini doc. We do not have the manpower to run 5 projects and documentation activities
2)Purchase supplies (identifying t-shirts and caps for participants, posters of Wikipedia articles of artists to exhibit along with their works on campus...)
3) Semana i (costs associated with invited speakers, possibly transportation), execution of the five projects
4)Editing and publication of mini-doc
Schedule
[edit]I have 0 coding skills for tables. I have always copy-pasted tables as I needed them. This is a very rough schedule, summarizing all five projects

Pages have been set up in Commons/eswiki, depending on where the project/activity will be most active. Links to the pages are here https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Countries/M%C3%A9xico/Tec_de_Monterrey/Semana_i_September_2016
Impact
[edit]Target readership
[edit]Wikimedia Commons, and Spanish Wikipedia primarily. If we have foreign students, we may work in other langauges.
Fit with strategy
[edit]What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.
For two of the activities, we are partnering with two cultural institutions, the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana and the Fonateca Nacional. We have recruited a number of socially-conscious musicians who are willing to donate their time and skills to play the pieces in question and put them in a free license. Video/audio production work will be done by participating students. We have recruited some experts for the other events, such as local historians and literary experts to help with the articles, especially selection of topics and sources of information.
Measures of success
[edit]Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.
We anticipate 15 videoed interviews, 10 audio files, 10 midi files and 10 pdfs of music scores, 3000+ photographs and video clips and 40+ articles created or improved, primarily geography and biographies. The work on video and music recording are the start of longer-term collaborations with the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana and the Fonatec Nacional de México respectively. We also plan to make a mini-doc about our activities, similar to what we presented at Wikimania 2015 and what Wikimedia Armenia did with Wiki Camp.
The professionally-done filming will result in a finished mini-doc overview of activities. It and all raw footage will be in a CC-by-SA 4.0 license. The raw footage will allow us to later upload clips into Wikimedia Commons (e.g. speakers, production activities, etc.)
Recruitment of at least two more campuses to work in some with with Wikipedia for the next Semana i.
Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.
Resources and risks
[edit]We will probably not finish all the editing of what we record during Semana i. However, this is not a large concern as we have an ongoing servicio social (community service) program which can take over and complete projects. In fact, preparatory work is already happening with the music recording project.
This is the first time that Semana i activities are under profesors who are not avid Wikipedians. Previously, the teachers participated under the direction of Leigh Thelmadatter, with 9 years of Wiki experience.
Resources
[edit]We applied and received funds for a similar grant, but Semana i for March 2016 was cancelled/postponed so that we could create more impressive projects for September. Grants:PEG/Leigh Thelmadatter/Establishing finances of Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey/Report
The Tec de Monterrey will be providing all technical resources and working space, as well as transportation for students, if needed. Assistance for student participants includes teachers from the language department for writing, and teachers from the music and engineering department for production and post-production activities. The Tec also provides all equipment that students will use, including video, audio and specialized computer labs.
Participating musicians will be donating their time and talents to the recordings, releasing their rights to a CC-by-SA 4.0 license. As many of these folk musicians are poor and some live outside of Mexico City, we would like to offer to pay their transport, and some a couple of them, possibly lodging. We do not have dormitories.
The Salón de la Plástica Mexicana will provide the artworks, their transport and insurance for the art exhibition in conjunction with the video interview of their artists by students. They will also assist with the promotion of at least this portion of the overall event.
There are five projects/events being bundled under this grant request. Each project/event has its own leader who has experience with Wikipedia and/or the type of activity. Martha Gomez and Alvaro Alvarez ran wiki-expeditions during past Semana i's and are running the wiki-expeditions to Colonia Roma/Colonia Condesa and to the Desierto de los Leones, respectively. Thelmadatter has 9 years experience with Wikipedia. She will be running the artist video project, and prototypes have been made this summer (see a very rough one at the Wikipedia article for Helen Bickham). She will be doing general coordination. Antonio Alcala has experience working with Wikipedia in his classes and Semana I and will be doing the literature editathon. The traditional music project is headed by Lourdes Epstein, who co-organized Wiki Learning and Alejandro Ramos, the director of the sound engineering program. For both the audio and video recording, professional studios and equipement, provided by Tec de Monterrey, will be used and the project will be done by digital media and sound engineering students.
Risks
[edit]While we have most of resources students need, we are not a liberal arts university, so we lack certain specialties. Students doing wiki-expeditions would strongly benefit from orientation on the areas they will be covering photographically, especially to avoid the obvious and already well-covered. For this reason, we have contacted specialists for the two expedition areas, with one stating that a small honorarium is requires. Expert help is even more important for the recording of Mexican traditional music, as our students are mostly unfamiliar with it and prepare for careers in the pop music field. We will need small honorariums for these outside experts as well.
Budget
[edit]Please provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines.
Grantees are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses. Changes to the approved budget beyond 10% in any category must be approved in advance.
- Project budget table
Number | Category | Item description | Unit | Number of units | Cost per unit | Total cost | Currency | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 10 60x90cm posters of 10 Wikipedia articles | print fees | 1 poster | 10 | 250 | 2500 | MXN | To exhibit Wikipedia articles of the artists in the exhibition. These will be part of said exhibition. (Project with video recording of artists from the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana) |
2 | Filming/editing for mini-doc about Wiki activities during Semana i | Rough budget provided by Puliendo Talentos, S.C. of Mexico City | 1 project | 1 | 20,000 | 20,000 | MXN | This is a very good deal as it includes all filming on two campuses, editing for a five-minute finished products with it and all rough footage in CC-by-SA 4.0 license. Later, we can use the rough footage to make clips for Commons. This is for documenting of all five projects/events. |
3 | Caps | Event baseball caps | Per person | 50 | 46 | 2300 | MXN | Quote from Gorras. These caps are intended for teachers and those odd sizes who might not be comfortable in a t shirt. These will simply have the Wikipedia logo. These caps will be for all student and teacher participants of all five projects/events |
4 | Honorarium | Services of ethnomusicologist associated with the National Sound Library | 1 person | 1 | 2000 | 2000 | MXN | This is a specialist of a type we do not have at Tec de Monterrey. As explained in the body of the grant, his services are needed as our students do not have expertise in the documentation of this kind of music. This speaker will give workshops to the students working with the music project, and help supervise. |
5 | Honorarium | Musical director/producer Diego Torres Cantú of the Berklee College of Music | 1 person | 1 | 4000 | 4000 | MXN | Like the ethnomusicologist, this is expertise we lack at Tec de Monterrey. This person will coordinate musicians and give workshops to students on score transcription. This speaker will give workshops to the students working with the music project, and help supervise. Will also give a short talk during the opening of the week's events. |
6 | Travel | Expenses for participating musicans | 1 musician | 6 | 6000 | MXN | This is an educated guess, for bus transport and in one or two cases a couple nights hotel. Most live in the Mexico City area but a few with ability to play specialized instruments outside. As these are not rich people who have volunteered their time, it is just to not make them pay for their participation either. | |
7 | Honorarium | official historian of the Cuauhtemoc borough (Colonia Condesa and Colonia Roma) | 1 person | 1 | 1000 | 1000 | MXN | To give workshops on history and architecture to students to better document the area photographically. This amount does not really cover his services, but is a professional courtesy. This is for the wiki-expedition to Colonias Roma and Condesa. The purpose is to take photographs related to the architecture and culture, rather than typical tourist stuff. |
8 | Certificates | Participation certificatese for students | 1 printed certificate with name | 240 | 4 | 800 | MXN | Quote from service we always use for this. In Mexican culture, certificates of this type are collected and used by recipients. These will be from the Wikipedia Education Program, not from Tec de Monterrey. Tec will take care of certificates and gifts for speakers and other professional participants. This is for all students in all projects. |
9 | Food service | Toase for art and Wikipedia article exhibit | 1 printed certificate with name | 100 | 85 | 8500 | MXN | Quote from on-campus food services. Includes wine and simple canape's. The number is assuming an open event. It can be fewer if it have it by invite. If it is an open event, it will be open to all students and of course, artists from the Salon de la Plástica Mexicana. |
10 | Food service | Breakfast service for opening day | per person | 220 | 45 | 9900 | MXN | Quote from on-campus food services. Coffee, tea, juice, sweet breads in buffett. For all students, but only as part of the opening of the week's events. |
11 | stickers | Wikipedia logo stickers | 1 sticker | 1000 | 1.1 | 1100 | MXN | Quote from same company that printed our last batch of Wikipedia logo stickers. Not only cheaper, but better quality vinyl as well. Swag for all participants for all five projects/events, and for press, too. |
- Total cost of project
- $57.110 MXN ($3,173 USD at 18/1 exchange rate)
- Total amount requested from the Project and Event Grants program
- $57,110 MXN
- Additional sources of revenue that may fund part of this project, and amounts funded
Tec de Monterrey will be providing space, access to studios and other video and sound facilities and much of the small equipment we will need (projections, stages, set up for art exhibit, video equipment for student use). There is also material support from the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana and FONOTECA. We will not have a figure for the value of all this, but its safe to say that it is worth more than the grant we are asking for.
Non-financial requirements
[edit]- Requests for non-financial assistance, if any
We request visit(s) from WMF staff, especially for the opening of the event. We will be using the Wikipedia logo on the event t-shirts and caps.

- Support - I am impressed with the previous report and this one seem like a good one to me. Good luck with the project. Wikicology (talk) 06:39, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
- CLark Murray: i would like to add to what Martha Carillo said earlier about the size of the project here at Tec CCM. Our wiki project, conducted entirely by Leigh Thelmadhatter, is an important link between the traditional classroom and the digital world whereby the students expect to participate. Our involvement with Wiki is getting so big and is diversifying at such a level that we would appreciate any additional resources, especially if they are linked with innovative ideas and other projects around the globe. Our students feel entitled to participate with how information is distributed and this project is definitely a means for them to achieve that goal.
- Sounds like an interesting project, I'm actually intersted in taking that activity on semana i, I'm a student of the CDMX campus Cbbssbbc (talk) 14:50, 4 July 2016 (UTC)Cbbssbbc
- User:Thelmadatter has always been a leader in documenting and reporting the education program achievements at Tec de Monterrey. I think it's clear that opportunity has grown out of this good use of reporting impact and reach to expand Wikimedia education activities and opportunities at the institution. I'm happy to see this opportunity to expand the scope and scale of activities at Tec de Monterrey. I endorse this application and am excited to see growing outcomes from students in Mexico, and the learnings that come out of this event. Tighe Flanagan (WMF) (talk) 15:52, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
