Project idea

[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

[edit]
Wikipedia is becoming technically more and more demanding. We now have immense possibilities which stem from the development of Wikidata, Wikimedia Maps, Graphs and other services. However, we rarely use these to their full potential and fail to provide 21st century content to our readers.

What is your solution?

[edit]
There is a small group of people who keep pace with technical development. These people could teach the participants of the camp how to write advanced templates or modules, use Wikidata in infoboxes, write Wikidata queries, create dynamic maps, add content to Wikidata using QuickStatements or Petscan, operate various bots or analyze Wikipedia using various tools or Quarry, etc.

Project goals

[edit]
Participants of the course will become ambassadors of new technical development, messengers and go-to people for their Wikimedia language communities. This regular event will foster the improvement of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects by introducing technical improvements.

Notes:

  1. The camp should be at least a week-long event.
  2. The participants would pay a participation fee. This will ensure only the self-motivated volunteers will take part and there will be a strong working morale.
  3. A precise, almost school-like timeline must be followed to ensure that no time is wasted. There would be lessons in the morning and in the afternoon with a break for lunch. Participants would regularly self-evaluate their learnings.
  4. There might be two different types of lectures - one for people who can code and the other for people who are still learning to code. Operating bots or writing a Quarry may sometimes be more demanding and complete newbies to the Tech world would probably struggle.
