Purpose of the report
[edit]This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their results to date. For progress reports, the time period for this report will the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). For impact reports, the time period for this report will be the full 12 months of this grant, including the period already reported on in the progress report (e.g. 1 January - 31 December of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Telling your program stories - all programs
[edit]Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.
- We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
- Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
- We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
- We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.
- You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

Quality Content
Wiki Loves Projects
As in previous years, in 2021 as well Wikimedia Armenia participated in two “Wiki loves…” projects - Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments. These are those projects that are highly welcomed and loved in Armenia.
Wikimedia Armenia joined the “Wiki Loves Earth” photo contest in June. 36 people participated in the contest by uploading 6124 photos of natural monuments to Wikimedia Commons. Within the framework of this project Wikimedia Armenia collaborated with the WWF Armenia. The latter supported a group of photographers’ visits to the Sevan and Dilijan National Parks.
Thirty-two people took part in the “Wiki Loves Monuments” 2021 photo contest. Considering the COVID-19 situation in Armenia and Wikimedia Armenia’s financial condition, photo tours were not planned and the number of participants was quite low. All in all, 5674 photos of various monuments of Armenia to Wikimedia Commons.
For both photo contests, the jury evaluated the quality of uploaded photos and decided on the winners.
Thematic edit-a-thons
Wikimedia Armenia has always had some focus on developing thematic content on Armenian Wikipedia. Consequently, several edit-a-thons were organized during the year concentrating on specific topics and trying to encourage the creation of quality articles. Thematic edit-a-thons are usually open initiatives for everyone to join, however, they are organized for Wikiclubs. Both “World Famous People” and “A Walk Around the World” edit-a-thons were carried out within the framework of Wikiclubs, however, a lot of other community members joined them.
The purpose of “World Famous People” was to write articles about the world-famous people of different specialties and most importantly to ensure the geographical diversity in the created articles. The Wikiclubs participated with teams and in order to ensure the quality of articles created by the participants, Wikiclub coordinators checked all articles. Thus, 53 people participated in the edit-a-thon by creating 480 articles about famous people. It is important to mention that 64 articles about women were created during the edit-a-thon.
Considering that due to COVID-19 there are restrictions on traveling around the world, Wikimedia Armenia decided to start an edit-a-thon which will enable the participants to travel to different places of the world by writing articles about them. “A Walk Around the World” had 4 stages and each stage was dedicated to a certain continent. Forty-one participants created 365 articles about different cities and towns of the world.
“Education Around the World” edit-a-thon was an attempt to motivate the participants of the Summer Wikipedia training course by creating articles on educational topics. As a result, 17 participants created 23 articles on Armenian Wikipedia.
GLAM projects
Collaborations with various GLAM institutions are one of the most important programmatic directions for Wikimedia Armenia. This year, WMAM collaborated with two GLAM institutions - ICOM National Committee of Armenian Museums and the House-Museum of Aram Khachaturian.
The purpose of these two initiatives is to encourage the staff of different institutions to write articles about museums, including their museums, in order to cover the information about their exhibits and artifacts. Within the framework of “Khachaturian Days on Wikipedia”, the purpose was to fill the gap in the content on Aram Khachaturian in different Wikimedia projects. In the case of the “Presence of Museums in Wiki Projects” competition, staff members of different museums, including 20 newcomers, joined the competition by creating 283 articles about museums and their exhibits.
Such collaborations and initiatives will be continuous.
Collaborations with various institutions
Wikimedia Armenia is always trying to expand the network of its collaborations engaging various institutions and organizations in various initiatives. This time WMAM cooperated with the Central Bank of Armenia continuing the tradition of creating quality content on financial-economic topics, the Internet Society of Armenia concentrating on Armenian topics, and the Public Awareness and Monitoring Center aiming at improving content on the energy efficiency and renewable energy on Armenian Wikipedia.
Financial-Economic Wikimonth
Continuing the tradition of collaborating with the Central Bank of Armenia, Wikimedia Armenia organized the “Financial-Economic Wikimonth” contest trying to engage university students, financiers, and other interested people in creating and improving articles about finances and economics. In order to provide high-quality articles, the jury consisted of two groups - staff members of various banks checked the content and Wikipedians checked the wikification and technical quality of all articles. The Central Bank of Armenia and its partner financial organizations prepared awards and gifts for top participants. This initiative will be continuous.
Wiki Campaign on Armenian Topics
The creation of content on Armenian topics - culture, history, people, cuisine and so on - is one of the vital directions for WMAM. In collaboration with the Internet Society of Armenia, WMAM started a wiki campaign dedicated to Armenian topics. Overall, 722 articles about the history of Armenia, monuments, settlements, and people were created on Armenian Wikipedia. The Internet Society of Armenia provided certificates of participation, small gifts, and gift cards to top participants. This campaign will be continuous.
Edit-a-thon on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Public Awareness and Monitoring Center suggested Wikimedia Armenia start an edit-a-thon dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy. The edit-a-thon was carried out within the framework of the #EnergyAwareness initiative. The purpose was to increase the number of quality articles on Armenian Wikipedia, as well as to raise public interest in Wikipedia and awareness about energy efficiency. To make the job of the participants easier a special English-Armenian dictionary of energy-saving terms. The Public Awareness and Monitoring Center provided certificates and awards for the authors of outstanding articles in terms of quality and size.
CEE Spring 2021
Every year Wikimedia Armenia participates in the CEE Spring initiative writing about the history, culture, architecture, and people of countries in the Central and Eastern European countries. In 2021, 41 experienced editors joined the contest creating and improving 386 articles, 64 out of which were about women. Overall, 39 countries and 20 topics were covered by the Armenian participants within the framework of CEE Spring 2021.

Participation in International Activities
Wikipedia for Peace
Wikimedia Armenia encourages its community members’ participation in various international initiatives and activities. In 2021, one of the active members of the Armenian community participated in the "Wikipedia for Peace Online: Writing about SCI History" online Wikicamp which was dedicated to the history of SCI. She not only learned a lot of things about the organization but also had the chance to socialize with new people and exchange her experience and knowledge. Such international opportunities should be continuous to engage local youth and interested people in international projects and activities so that they can feel like a part of the bigger community rather than the smaller local one.
Wikimania 2021 and CEE Online Meeting 2021
Wikimedia Armenia decided to participate in Wikimania 2021 and CEE online meeting presenting WMAM’s educational and GLAM projects, its experience, lessons learned, etc. We were not able to receive a Wikimania scholarship because of issues around Wikimedia Armenia, that’s why local activities were not implemented, only a pre-recorded presentation was prepared. In CEE online meeting Wikimedia Armenia had two sessions and presented a comprehensive overview of Wikipedia training courses and a lightning talk about the “Khachaturian Days on Wikipedia” project.
WPWP 2021
This year for the first time Wikimedia Armenia also joined the WPWP project trying to enrich the pages of multilingual wiki projects with existing or newly uploaded photos on Wikimedia Commons. Unfortunately, Wikimedia Armenia could not apply for a grant so it did not actively spread the word about this project. Only 9 participants took part in the project 608 photos to articles.
Community's engagement in local initiatives
20th Birthday of Wikipedia
In 2021, Wikipedia celebrated its 20th birthday and Wikimedia Armenia decided to join the celebrations by organizing an online event. Before January 15, an edit-a-thon dedicated to Wikipedia’s 20th birthday was initiated. 64 people took part in the edit-a-thon writing 671 gift articles. The participants were expected to write 20 articles for the occasion. Wiki community members joined the online event via Zoom and followed the 20 years' story of Wikipedia.
Education Program
Yerevan Brusov State University students' internship at Wikimedia Armenia
The collaboration with Yerevan State University is one of the outstanding annual projects that Wikimedia Armenia has. Based on a memorandum signed several years ago, the Bachelor's and Master’s students of Yerevan Brusov State University do their internship at the office of Wikimedia Armenia. The students are from the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Russian and Foreign Languages, the English Department of the Faculty of Translation and Intercultural Communication, and this year the students from the Department of Asian Languages of the same faculty also joined the internship.
Considering the COVID-19 situation in Armenia, the internship was organized online. Sixty students did their internship in Wikimedia Armenia. To make the training easier and faster, as it was impossible to teach Wikipedia tools to 60 students at the same time, several groups were organized.
Basically, the students spent almost two weeks of their internship learning Wikipedia tools and getting to know about the Wikimedia movement and other Wikimedia projects. Subsequently, they started creating articles based on their interests. Besides creating articles, several students were chosen to be “reviewers” meaning that they not only created articles but also checked translations of the articles created by other students. Mainly the “reviewers” were the best students in their respective faculties. This time the students translated articles not only from English and Russian to Armenian but also from Chinese and Korean languages.
At the end of their internship, Wikimedia Armenia graded their work based on wikification and quality, and quantity. As a result, 60 students created 225 articles and improved 14 articles. The largest article created during the internship was “Women’s health”.
Wikipedia Training Courses
Previously, Wikimedia Armenia organized Wikipedia training courses only for teachers or people of other specialties. However, in 2021 we initiated several contests which were supposed to engage newcomers. To provide equal grounds for newcomers and experienced editors, Wikimedia Armenia decided to conduct special training courses for newcomers so that they can have as much knowledge about Wikimedia projects as possible to compete with experienced editors. Such training courses were conducted for the “Financial-Economic Wikimonth” and “Wiki Campaign on Armenian Topics” competitions.
The newcomers of both competitions were divided into groups and each group had a wiki trainer who introduced them to the Wikimedia movement, Wikipedia tools, and other Wikimedia projects. The groups met 2-3 times a week with their wiki trainer using the online Zoom platform.
After the 15-day training course, all newcomers were ready for the competition along with experienced participants. The results of these training courses showed that it is more productive to organize such courses before projects which are planning to engage beginners. This practice will be continuous.
Online Wikipedia Courses For Teachers
Continuing the best practice of Online Wikipedia courses for teachers which began in 2020 because of the pandemic, Wikimedia Armenia organized another online course for teachers during summer break. The participants were divided into smaller groups to make it easier for wiki trainers to present Wikipedia tools and work with each and every participant separately. During the first month, the participants learned the basics and began creating articles. To provide high-quality articles, the wiki trainers checked the articles in participants’ sandboxes and corrected mistakes; only after that, the participants were allowed to publish their articles.
The other two months of the training course were mostly dedicated to creating articles. The participants had the chance to ask questions to wiki trainers whenever they had problems. During this training course, 87 people joined the wiki community but 45 people were actively creating articles on Wikipedia. As a result of the training, 217 articles were created.
Wikiclubs
The COVID-19 pandemic slowed down the work Wikiclubs were doing mainly because Wikiclubs are spaces where people meet and share their wiki experiences, write articles together, start projects or participate in contests. Because of restrictions, the Wikiclubs worked online before some restrictions were removed but Wikiclub coordinators did their best to keep the club members motivated.
Wikiclubs participated in various projects, edit-a-thons, and competitions that Wikimedia Armenia started - “20 articles on Wikipedia’s 20th Birthday”, “WikiGap 2021”, “Khachaturian Days on Wikipedia”, “Wiki Campaign on Armenian Topics”, “A Walk Around the World”. Besides participating in various projects, Wikiclubs also have their own projects which they initiate and try to spread to other Wikiclubs. The clubs usually organize meetings with different schools in order to introduce Wikipedia to new people and expand the network of the Wiki movement.
Because of limited financial resources and 2020 war, Wikimedia Armenia had to shut down several Wikiclubs, more specifically 5 of them. Now only 7 Wikiclubs are operating.
Organizational development
Since late November 2020, Wikimedia Armenia is going through an investigative process by the Affiliations Committee trying to solve governance issues and achieve compliance with the recommendations presented by AffCom. Throughout 2021, Wikimedia Armenia communicated with the AffCom. There were many misunderstandings and misinterpretations of communication so the process was constantly delayed. Wikimedia Armenia did not receive funds for programmatic purposes so it had to carry out activities that did not need funding or the presents and certificates were provided by partner organizations.
In December 2021 an Extraordinary General Assembly was held in Wikimedia Armenia which was aimed at solving some governance issues within the organization. The previous Board resigned and a new Board was selected.

[edit]Resources to plan for measurement
[edit]- Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
- Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
- Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.
