Questions to consider in your application

[edit]
  • Will you still come if you receive a partial scholarship or no scholarship at all?

Yes

  • What are you hoping to achieve?

My name is Sadik Shahadu from Ghana. I am the Founder and Executive Director of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group, a certified trainer of the ‘Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom’ program and a member of the Wikimedia Executive Directors Group,

Over the past eight (8) years, my efforts as a Wikimedia community leader have contributed to the significant growth of Wikidata in Ghana. I have trained several Wikimedia volunteers on Wikidata and helped create more Wikimedia language communities in Ghana, including the Dagbani Wikimedians user group. My leadership at the Dagbani Wikimedians user group has helped the community translate more than 268,349 (0.26%) Wikidata property labels and create over 8,630 lexemes, making the Dagbani Wikipedia one of the most integrated languages on Wikidata in Africa.

Since 2019, I have onboarded 5 African indigenous language projects on Wikimedia, namely Dagbani Gurene, Moore, Kusaal, and Dagaare Wikimedia projects in Ghana. Out of the 5 Wikipedia language communities that were established under the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group, 3 have officially been approved as full-language Wikis (Dagbani, Dagaare and Gurene).

In addition to that, I piloted the Dagbani Wikipedia Saha tele-education program, a digital TV program that seeks to educate people about Wikipedia and how they can contribute to the Dagbani Wikipedia and its sister projects. The Dagbani Wikipedia Saha program is one of the most important projects I have implemented in the last two years because of its impact on our community and the opportunity to train more volunteers to edit Wikipedia from the comfort of their homes. Since the program is aired on a digital TV channel, it has become easier for editors to watch and contribute to Wikipedia without the need to attend our online or offline events due to distance, location, and time. I hope to share more about how the Australian Wikimedia minority communities can use digital TV to uplift their language Wikipedia projects.
