Event:WikiCon Australia 2024/Scholarships/PriyadharshaniK

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
  • Will you still come if you receive a partial scholarship or no scholarship at all?

Thank you for the opportunity. Given that I am a student, and having 2 kids, it will be difficult for me to participate if I did not receive the support.

  • What are you hoping to achieve?

I am new to wikipedia editing. But I found it inspiring after attending wikipedia editing session. Currently I have added a page for a female scientist which is ranked as star-grade. Also I added a page on First Nations Olympians in Australia. Given I am a PhD student researching on skin infections, I learnt world's highest reported rates of skin infections are prevalent among Australian First Nations children in rural and remote settings. Also, my research together with literature revealed education is one of the best tools in skin infection management and prevention. Therefore, I love to learn more wikipedia editing options as well as translating options for me to better disseminate health information among Australians. Moreover, I love to improve professional network, where I could seek support in difficult and challenging situations.

  • What skills are you hoping to learn?

After adding the interesting page: First Nations Olympians in Australia, I am getting suggestions by wikipedia. However, due to my little exposure I am finding it really challenging to understand and respond in proper way. Therefore, advanced wikipedia editing, and translating are my main targets in attending the WikiCon Australia 2024. Also I am interested in learning handy tips and tricks for better improvement and knowledge sharing.

  • What are you hoping to teach?

I can teach the importance of health literacy and promotion of health education for better future. Currently First Nations kids in rural and remote setting are suffering from Rheumatic Heart Disease and are dying, after getting infected with bacteria from skin infections which could be easily prevented. I believe I could do a presentation on 'Importance of disseminating health information' given my experience as an academic. However, given my limited exposure to wikipedia editing, I will not be able to teach how to edit wikipedia.

  • What sessions have you proposed?

I did not propose any session given my limited exposure to editing in wikipedia. But, if I am allocated a time, I am happy to talk about the importance of disseminating the knowledge to equip First Nations people to prevent health conditions and have a healthy life.

  • Will your contributions help Australian First Nations content?

Yes, I would like to summarize the current research findings and get those in to lay persons terms and edit existing pages or publish new wikipedia pages. This is also a part of my social responsibility as a Pharmacist, Academic and a Researcher. Currently I am in the final year of my PhD.

  • Will your contributions help Australian content?

I do hope translating scientific subjects such as infections and Pharmacy related data to lay persons language should be done by professionals in the particular area and I am equipped to do these.

  • Are you from a minority group?

I am a migrant from Sri Lanka. I am not particularly sure whether Sinhalese speaking people are considered minority. Apart from that I believe that I do not belong to any minority group.

  • Are you from regional or rural Australia?

No. But my PhD research covered those areas and I have understanding on skin infections affecting families in those areas and challenges in healthcare.

  • Are you a new editor?

Yes. I attended an wikipedia editing session conducted by Franklin Woman recently, which inspired me to search for other sessions.

The program is yet to be decided but current proposed sessions may be found here
