Culture Connect Africa is a collaborative initiative developed by African & Proud (AP) to enrich Wikimedia's content on African culture. This project brings together diverse communities and contributors to spotlight African heritage through multiple creative and cultural lenses — from cuisine and film to festivals and beyond.

Why It Matters?

[edit]

African culture is rich and diverse, but it remains underrepresented on platforms like Wikipedia. This project aims to:

  • Fill knowledge gaps about African history, art, cuisine, and media.
  • Ensure that African narratives are shaped and shared by African communities.
  • Encourage more African-language content on Wikimedia projects.

Culture Connect Africa is about giving African culture the visibility and recognition it deserves — on a platform that reaches millions of people worldwide.

Culture Connect Africa serves as a platform where African creators, researchers, and culture enthusiasts collaborate to fill content gaps and promote a more authentic representation of African culture.

Project Overview

[edit]

Culture Connect Africa encompasses three transformative projects that work together to amplify African culture’s digital presence:

  1. AfroCuisine – Celebrating the richness and diversity of African cuisine.
  2. WikiFestival – Creating spaces to engage communities in capturing and sharing African cultural heritage.
  3. African Film & Cinema – Promoting African cinematic heritage.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the African & Proud (AP) team to close the content gap on African culture across Wikimedia platforms, including Wikipedia in African languages such as Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa.

By connecting communities, Culture Connect Africa aims to build a stronger, more inclusive representation of African identity and creativity online.
