Discussion

[edit]

Hi @Reda,

I am happy to help, but have some additional comments first.

SheSaid banners in general run on a low diet on the Wikipedia (to get Wikipedia editors to start on Wikiquote), not only on Wikiquote as in your request above. I can turn it on for the Arab Wikipedia ahead of the general start of the SheSaid campaign, but last time I created a banner for the Arab Wikipedia I received complaints that the CentralNotice banners were not visible, and I think it is the piece of code in line 1032 and 1039 of the Arab Wikipedia common.css that hides all CentralNotice campaigns to the project. Has there been a community consultation on this? I'd like to read the discussion and reasons for the decision.

About the banner design your created: CN banners don't run from the front but from the server side and therefore have to be scripted in HTML/CSS. Information like in the general SheSaid campaign is what I need, though 1) a line of text 50-70 characters max, 2) a visual (not too detailed) and 3) one landingpage link (in the same language as the text) is already enough for me to create the banner. My coding abilities are limited and I don't know how to create links to multiple pages in one banner though. Also, as explained in the banner guidelines, we do not link to non-Wikipedia sites directly from the banners. The two Google docs in your design can definitely not be in the banner: they can of course be on the landing page if you choose so. Ciell (talk) 16:23, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This gadget not only hides fundraising banners, but all CentralNotice banners: w:ar:MediaWiki:Gadget-HideFundraisingNotice.css. Romaine (talk) 09:44, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, maybe that is the blocker Romaine, thanks! I see it was created back in 2008 and that was before we used the banners for something else than just fundraising requests. A small code change would do the trick, right? Ciell (talk) 09:54, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both! After an extensive discussion with the group, we have decided to place the banner on both the Arabic and English Wikiquote. For the Arabic Wikipedia, we plan to request a mass message targeting the 1000 most active editors. I have also removed the external links from the banner itself. Can we proceed with this? Hi @Reda Kerbouche,
There are a few complicating factors here.
The general SheSaid banner is already targeting those with Arab interface setting, and directing them to the general SheSaid page where this is the page for the Arab version of SheSaid. If I need to target the UAE with a separate banner, this would mean that the general Arab banner settings need to be changed to country specific targeting as well. This is going to be a lot of work to set up for me, and there is a big risk in missing out on Arab speakers not in those countries. This is a choice the international team can make, and I'll leave this to you.
Furthermore, the banner needs to be in HTML/CSS, as I explain in my second paragraph above. At the moment I don't have time nor the skills to design a banner as in your design. This is wikicode, not HTML/CSS as explained on the CentralNotice Help page.
Alternative: I think the easiest solution would be to add the UAE page to the general SheSaid landingpage on Meta, and making sure the Arab translation is updated, because that will be where people end up when they click on the banner Arab translation of the general banner. Hi @Reda Kerbouche,
Since there are no more response here, I am going to close the request. I do hope your campaign will be successful nonetheless! Ciell (talk) 10:17, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes please, we start a discussion and the community agreed to put the the banner from WP in Arabic. Sorry I havent notified you earlier Reda Kerbouche (talk) 14:14, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Reda Kerbouche,
The general banner should already be visible for you on Arab Wikipedia. Ciell (talk) 14:21, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
