Discussion
[edit]Hi MPourzaki (WMF), Could you please give some more details about your request? For instance when you would like to have a banner, and plan it in the calendar accordingly? Ciell (talk) 21:53, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Ciell, thanks for following up. This is my first Central Notice request, so I appreciated the guidance. In the calendar I had indicated Nov. 4 to Nov. 10. Does that work? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 13:20, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): The plan is to run a CentralNotice which starts and ends ~two weeks before the events? I don't really understand the thinking behind this; could you explain? --Yair rand (talk) 06:47, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Yair rand. Our thinking was to do a one month 'save the date' via mailinglists and then a two-week heads up via Central Notice and massmessage. If we do Central Notice closer and during the events, my concern was that people might say 'this is too last minute, why didn't you let us know earlier.' Earlier notice would also encourage active editors to get more involved, who may not be involved with the affiliate structure. What are your thoughts? Happy to move it around. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 16:01, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi MPourzaki (WMF), there are several requests for global notices in November, as you can see on this page and more over in the calendar. So I do agree with Yair that you would need to plan, as per our guidelines, the banners need to be as little intrusive as possible. You could consider doing a banner for one day, twice in a week for instance. That would also work against banner-blindness, which occurs when there's is always a banner visible and people will not notice the banner any more. Please explore all different kinds of possibilities for our banners (for instance: geo targetting/project targetting/language targetting/combinations of these options): Help:CentralNotice. Ciell (talk) 16:19, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Ciell, thank you so much for your guidance and patience. I have changed the dates for two shorter windows: once the week before the global meeting, and the other during. Since this is a global meeting, we are not geolocating, we really want everyone invited. In this case, especially only editors who may not necessarily identify with an affiliate. We are not geo targeting or project targeting, but are language targeting (please see message). Did I get it right? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- That does look a lot better to me. Translation of the message goes through translatewiki, you can set that up once the banner has been created. Ciell (talk) 18:24, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- I really appreciate your help Ciell. Just made the banner. Now to set up translations. It doesn't matter that we did our own translations already? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:28, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

- @MPourzaki (WMF): I created your banner, this is a preview. Please let me know what you think. Once you are satisfied, you can start translating. Since you are targetting 'the whole world' I would advise to translate into as many languages as possible. Some communities will be felt left out, hurt or angry if a banner shows up on their project, that is not in their language with not even the possibility of translating. So give them an opportunity to help. I'd rather limit the amount of impressions a person gets (which is why I advise to do two small sequences), than limiting the languages this banner is in. Especially since we are using the same banner twice right? The second time around you'll have all these translated banners at your disposal. Your landing page is fully translatable already anyway. And I would not recommend limiting the different projects it will be shown on: all projects might have sensible things input right? Ciell (talk) 21:48, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Ciell: Thank you so much. The banner looks great. Very grateful. Is it possible to have the images slightly larger? Also, as per banner above, I decided to remove the reference to times, simply inviting people to join the global conversations on November 21 and 22. I really like your approach. We will translate in as many languages as possible and leave the rest open. We will have Arabic, Farsi, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish covered. I am in full agreement with your suggestion - do two sprints and hopefully we'll have more translation by the time the same banner goes up aagain. Let's not limit the projects either, I appreciate your advise. Let me know when we can get to translating. And once again, thanks! MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:15, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): I'd rather not enlarge the images much more (I have done now just al little bit), because I have the banners set to show on mobile as well and big images in the mobile browsers mostly annoy, instead of making people engage. Important information should for that reason not be in the images of the CN banners, but in the text and the landing page. The multi-coloured images will catch the eye, and hopefully the words make them visit the landing page. You can enter all your translations here. Ciell (talk) 10:21, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Ciell, the banner looks great and your guidance re: image size makes total sense. We'll dive into the translations now. Thank you so much for all your help. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 14:55, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Ciell:, I can't figure out the translation. The link takes me to a page with close to 2000 entries and when I search for any of the keywords in our banner, nothing shows up. Advise? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 15:18, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Try [1] maybe? Ciell (talk) 15:26, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): should be fixed now. Ciell (talk) 21:17, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- It is. Thank you so much Ciell. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 23:14, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

- @Ciell:, thank you so much for your help in setting this up! Really helpful and truly appreciated. As the banner is live now, we are receiving some negative feedback regarding the help translate link being on top of the right side image. Is there a simple fix for this? Would it be possible to have the translation link centered or have a small margin for the image, so the link would be displayed below that? Thank you for your kind attention and sorry for bothering - I have also not done any editing related to Central Notice and would not like to break anything. --KVaidla (WMF) (talk) 08:28, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
- @KVaidla (WMF): Yes, I was afraid that would happen. Easiest solution is just to remove the image on the right, like I've done now. Also because you'd want this banner to be suitable for a browsers and all devices it is best to keep a simple lay-out. If you'd like a different solution you'd have to ping a different admin, I do not (yet) have big designer skills in html/java, sorry about that. Ciell (talk) 12:11, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for looking into options, @Ciell:! I think that user experience friendly approach is the right one here and it does not make sense to overcomplicate it, so removing the right image is probably the best way to go. Thank you for taking your time looking into it and fixing it! --KVaidla (WMF) (talk) 12:15, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

@Ciell:: May a I ask for a small favor? Following this comment on our talk page, would you be able to add a Special:MyLanguage to the Central Notice banner? Thank you, best regards, --CKibelka (WMF) (talk) 14:09, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
- @CKibelka (WMF): What would the new link be? Ciell (talk) 14:41, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
- Just adding the Special:MyLanguage thing, so it would be: [[Special:MyLanguage/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transition/Global_Conversations|Join the global conversation on November 21 and 22.]]
- But all translations need to be reflagged/re-approved, right? *sigh* --Cornelius Kibelka (WMF) (talk to me) 14:44, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
- I changed the link in the banner, please let me know if this works for you. And no, I do not think all translations have to be done again, I can just changed the link in the interface - banners are not, like the one suggested in this request, made in wikitext but in java/html templates. So I can change individual components without touching others. Ciell (talk) 14:52, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you, Ciell, looks good to me! :) --Cornelius Kibelka (WMF) (talk to me) 15:30, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

@Ciell: First of all, I'd like to thank you for all your support in setting up this central notice, I learnt lots. It's been a success and we have had more registrations for the global events than expected, particularly from online editors that we don't often get to engage with. The registration closes Friday. Whenever you get this, would you kindly deactivate it. Thanks again for everything. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 23:10, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Pourzaki (WMF):, I turned of the banner. They could still show in some places, because CN banners have a different way of caching (not on people's personal devices, but on our servers). I have no influence on that. Ciell (talk) 09:42, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
- Oh, and happy to hear it was such a success of course!! Ciell (talk) 09:43, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
December banner
[edit]- Thank you so much Ciell. We'd like to run another brief banner next week, Monday Nov. 30 to Wednesday Dec. 2, to invite people to the next and final set of Global Conversations. I will create a new page for that accordingly. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:31, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): To keep things together, you could also just create a new heading on this page, as long as it fits the calender? Or would you like a whole different banner etc? Ciell (talk) 20:39, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- (Because talking 'global reach': the new banner would need to be translated again, etc. Ciell (talk) 20:39, 23 November 2020 (UTC))
- @Ciell: I just made a request and then I saw this. You are right. Best to keep things together. The banner text will be different though, Read the Results and Join the Next Global Conversation, December 5+6. Once the banner is up, I'll share it with the translators again. We had great results last time. Since the text of the banner is different, should I keep the new request or start a new heading here? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:51, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Just made a crude attempt above, let me know if it works. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 21:19, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- I'm okay either way.
- About the banner: if you change the text, you would preferably change the image as well. Though this one is very recognisable, people will not notice the changed text because they recognize the image (they've seen it twice already). You'll need something to catch their attention again. I'll look at your new request tomorrow, it's bed time over here. ;) Ciell (talk) 21:47, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hope you're resting well. Almost end of the work day here :). As always, thanks for your guidance. I have updated the banner with a new picture. Let me know what you think. Thank you so much. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 22:51, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you @MPourzaki (WMF):. The preview for the new banner is here, as you can see your second line of text is quite long. A call to action works best if your sentences are short and to the point. ("what do you expect people to do?" the rest you can explain on the landing page.) Ciell (talk) 10:41, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Ciell:. You're right, it looks too long. I updated the text above in the practice banner. What do you think? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 14:28, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @MPourzaki (WMF):, better! I added a 'with us', it makes the banner a bit more personal I think? new preview Ciell (talk) 19:19, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Ciell: the preview looks great. I really like the more inclusive language. The only thing about "with us" is that it creates an "us vs. them" divide, or "us vs. you." To build on your suggestion, how about we add "Let's continue the conversation on December 5 and 6." No rush. Whenever the preview is set up ... or the banner for that matter, I will send around for translations. Thank you so much. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:04, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): Ah yes. But is 'Let's' not an abbreviation for 'Let us'...? Just checking...! Ciell (talk) 20:14, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ciell:, it is indeed. I think in this arrangement, it adds a "let's go," "we are in it together" feel. In any case, the addition of "let's" "us" makes things more personal. Thank you. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): It does make it more personal. Okay, final check. Ciell (talk) 20:26, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ciell: forgive me. One FINAL addition. I just ran it be some community friends and they thought "emerging" would be difficult to translate. Could we replace that with "TOP." "What do you think about the top global priorities ..." Really grateful for your patience :) MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 20:39, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): For me personally this would still be a bit unclear, I would not recognize this as a next step in the process. But again, I'm not a native speaker. Ciell (talk) 20:57, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ciell: Ok, final check. Let's remove TOP also. This way nothing is competitive. We are asking people what they think about the global priorities (we will have the report of the Nov. 21+22 meetings up on Meta shortly, so people can review and comment). And then invite them to continue the conversation next weekend, Dec. 5 and 6. Any other thoughts to make it more clear in the two sentences? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 21:37, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): What is the difference between the conversations in November (first set) and the ones in December (second set)? Ciell (talk) 21:43, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ciell: We'll try to explain this well in our communications and on Meta. The first set of events were to identify global priorities for implementation from around 45 initiatives. The next set of events will only focus on the top priorities and we'll dig in deeper to discuss what the actual work could mean and to learn from communities who wants to do what exactly. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 21:49, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- @MPourzaki (WMF): I understand. But if you want me to click on the link a second time, I'll need convincing from the banner there will be new information on the meta-page. We might want to consider changing the second line of text: the dates are not *that* important (it's not a black-out or global maintenance) and can be mentioned on the metapage. And I think you would like people's opinion, even if they cannot attend on the specific dates.
- Let me chew on this for the night. Ciell (talk) 21:57, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- Have a great night @Ciell:. What people really appreciated about the first set of calls was connecting with Wikimedians from all over the world. Even though it was a working call, we made sure there were multiple small group discussions. So the social aspect is what people appreciated lots. At the same time, there is work to be done and the Dec. 5 and 6 events will need to dig deeper into the global priorities. So we need people to look at the results and let us know what they think, and to get excited about the next set of events. So either we could say "Let's continue the conversation on December 5+6 OR registration closes December 4" just so there is some kind of a timeframe. Tomorrow when we do the final check, I'll ping translators to the draft. Hope you have a lovely evening. MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 22:11, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Ciell: if alright with you, let's remove "top" from the existing banner you created and consider that the final. I think it's great for the purpose. And then we can share it for translation. What do you think? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 14:54, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @MPourzaki (WMF):, I would advise to keep the "top", but the final decision is up to you. Ciell (talk) 19:04, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- Ok @Ciell:, sounds great and thank you. Can I send this final check around for tranlsations? MPourzaki (WMF) (talk) 19:31, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- Great @MPourzaki (WMF):, and yes you can! I'll set the banner on active, it will go live Monday 0.00 UTC. Ciell (talk) 19:58, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
