Wikitongues/Reports/2024

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Center

This report outlines the accomplishments and activities of the group between May 2 2023 and May 2 2024. Commencing with a Movement Strategy Grant in 2023, our primary objective was expanding language diversity across Wikimedia projects and, more broadly, improving language access across the Wikimedia movement. Through meticulous planning and execution, we orchestrated events like translate-a-thons and record-a-thons, facilitated Wikimedia contributions to under-resourced languages, and directly supported mother-tongue contributions to Wikimedia projects and an array of engaging activities.

As part of a 2022 Movement Strategy Grant, we identified 10 Wikimedians from under-resourced language communities and were able to help them realize their communities’ Wikimedia goals, including: creating new language versions of Wikipedia, adding oral knowledge corpora to the Wikimedia Commons, and adding new languages to Wikidata. We also developed free resources for mother-tongue contributions to Wikimedia that expanded on earlier research by the Language Diversity Hub, as described in our previous grant proposal. With continued support, we can guarantee resources for another 10 mother-tongue Wikimedia projects, extending this work through April 2025 and further expanding language diversity in the Wikimedia movement.

Cross-Collaboration

Language Diversity Hub

[edit]

Wikitongues staff continued taking part in the Language Diversity Hub steering committee. Jointly, we applied for a Movement Strategy grant, in order to fund a pilot cohort model for onboarding new language communities to Wikimedia. For that grant project, we chose 10 language documentation and revitalization projects, taking part in various Wikimedia projects. Five of the projects are specifically for the Incubator Hub. None of these languages are in the Incubator Hub yet, so during this project year, we will be able to follow each language communities journey from start to (hopefully) finish. Through this process, we (Wikitongues and the Language Diversity Hub) can document the challenges language groups face in getting their language Wikipedia edition launched.
