Wikipedia on Aruba: a new chapter for cultural heritage
[edit]The Caribbean is home to countless untold stories and a unique heritage that needs to be shared. The project ‘Wikipedia on Aruba - Aruba on Wikipedia’ is committed to building an active Wikipedia community on Aruba and other Dutch islands, with a special focus on the Papiamentu language.
The faces behind the project
[edit]Ginelly Quandt and Ricardo Arends are the driving forces behind this initiative. In January, they spent two weeks in the Netherlands getting to know Wikimedians and heritage partners and attended training sessions on various Wikimedia topics.
A festive start
[edit]On 13 February, the project ‘Wikipedia on Aruba - Aruba on Wikipedia’ was festively launched during the kick-off meeting at the Biblioteca Nacional in Aruba. The initiative focuses on enriching information about Aruban and broader Dutch Caribbean culture and heritage on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. In addition, an important goal is to create an active Wikimedia community in Aruba. During the meeting, the 30 participants were explained about the project and the possibilities within Wikimedia. There were also presentations by Edric Croes of Archivo Nacional Aruba on the online visibility of Aruban cultural heritage and by Michelle van Lanschot on (photo) competitions on Wikimedia, with a special focus on Wiki Loves Monuments.
