The Wikimedia Fan Club University of Ibadan, established 2017, shall be for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and staff from University of Ibadan with the main purpose of contributing to Wikimedia and her related projects. This club shall domicile at the institution and run by the students with coordination from Wikimedia UG Nigeria (WUGN). This club will seek to promote Wikimedia project among the students through the execution of projects and training as a way of exposing the students to the movement.

The success of this project will primarily be to raise young Wikimedians among bonafide students of UI and to promote our local languages on Wikipedia. It will also help to integrate Wikimedia into the school curriculum.

We aim to achieve this by hosting several projects and events such as: edit-a-thons, GLAMs, Wikipedia Education programs and related projects, which aim to promote Wikimedia projects in the institution. The club will plan Wikimedian Ambassador program that rotates among the student on yearly basis. The selected person shall be the face of Wikimedia in the school

Events and Projects activities

Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ibadan was launched on Friday, 28th April 2017 at the university main campus. The project primarily focused on creating awareness about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The hashtag "Wiki fan" was created. Participants carried a cardboard carrying various inscription such as "I am a Wikipedian", "I love Wikipedia" and so on. They took images with it, and the images were uploaded to various social media including Facebook and Twitter. See some of the posts here

A wiki-workshop was organized for the Participants. They were introduced to Wikipedia and the basis of Wikipedia editing. One of the "secrets of Wikipedia" taught during the first session includes the use of infobox for quick information, citing sources, copyrights, biography of living persons. They were also introduced to other languages on Wikipedia such as Yoruba and Igbo Wikipedia. In the second session, participants were introduced to notability guidelines, reliable sources.

Our second visit to the institution was put on hold due to students' unrest on campus.

Wikivibrance 2022 Celebration

The International Youth Day (IYD) 2022 aims to engage young Wikimedians and the entire Wikimedia community in activities that will contribute to content related to this year's IYD theme "Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages". It will also recognize the work of diverse young people in building free knowledge in the movement. The Wikimedia Fan Club, UI holds a edit-a-thon event on the 14th of October, 2022 to celebrate IYD 2022.
