The Wikimedia Abuja Hub is a Wikimedia hub under Wikimedia UG Nigeria. The hub will serve Wikimedians in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. This hub seeks to promote Wikimedia projects in Abuja. We aim to organize several Wikimedia events, campaigns to create awareness about Wikimedia projects and trainings to recruit new editors. One of our core missions is to aid and encourage people to collect, develop and disseminate knowledge and other educational, cultural and historic content in the public domain or other licenses that allows everyone to freely use the knowledge, and to distribute and modify the contents for free.

Objectives

[edit]
  1. To promote the use of Wikimedia projects by people in Abuja
  2. To help people in Abuja learn how to contribute to Wikimedia projects
  3. To organize in-person gatherings of Wikimedians in Abuja
  4. To promote Wikimedia projects and free content in general.
  5. To encourage the use of Wikimedia resources in education (at cultural centers, associations and universities)
  6. Photography trips and upload-a-thons to teach users how to upload images to Commons and how to use them;

History

[edit]

In July 2016, Runcie Chidebe (Kabusa16) watched Isla Haddow-Flood TEDxAIMS video "It's Time For Africa To Tell Its Own Story" on YouTube. The video inspired him to research about Wiki Loves Women and WikiAfrica and he contacted Isla Haddow-Flood and Florence Devouard and requested to host Wiki Loves Women in Abuja. Through the guidance of Olushola Olaniyan, in September 2016, Runcie Chidebe mobilized and hosted the first Wiki Loves Women event in Abuja with twenty women. After the event, the Wikimedia Abuja Hub was recognized by Wikimedia User Group Nigeria.
