Executive Summary

This model is based on the experience and perspectives of those involved in data partnerships at Wikimedia Deutschland. The term “data partnerships” refers to partnerships involving Wikidata and Wikibase. Wikidata is a free and openly accessible Wikimedia project that stores linked open data about the world. Wikibase is the collaborative and free open-source software that powers Wikidata.

In our work as the data partnerships team we engage with partners from various sectors, each with different capacities, goals, resources and data collections. These partnerships aim to increase public access to knowledge in fields such as culture, history, government, business and science.

The primary purpose of this document is to address the following questions:

  • Why do we undertake this work?
  • Who are the partners we work with?
  • What are our focus areas?
  • What forms do data partnerships take?
  • What criteria guide the allocation of our resources?
  • What are the open questions and future challenges in this field?

The Data Partnerships Model is a living and collaborative document that is open to external input. Please contact us at swe_partnerships@wikimedia.de if you have any recommendations.
