Do you occasionally come across a mistake on the biggest internet encyclopedia? Are you missing articles on important scientists on Wikipedia?

2024-03-10: The seventh year of the Describe a Monument competition is over. It enriched Wikipedia with 448 new articles
[edit]Traditionally, during January and February, the Describe a Monument competition was held on the Czech Wikipedia, supported by Wikimedia Czech Republic through community minigrants.
The competition seeks to fill in the missing cultural monuments on Wikipedia. Given that there are about forty thousand of them in the Czech Republic, and every year a few dozen to a hundred more are added, this is not an easy task. In addition, this year the competition also included buildings from abroad.
And what articles were created thanks to the competition? Find out on our blog (Czech only)

2024-03-22: We will be writing articles about women in journalism together on Monday 25 March
[edit]💜 There are five times more articles about men than women on the Czech Wikipedia. There is a big disparity between male and female contributors (10:1), and even between male and female readers, although not so big.
🗨️ In this discussion, we will discuss the situation of women in the Czech media with the editor of CT news. We will also reflect on how their work is reflected in the public space and on Wikipedia.
💻 In the second part, we will look at editing Wikipedia practically. Bring your own laptop and Wikimedia Czech Republic tutors will help you with the article. At the end, we will go through the results of our work together. And we will share what women and topics we have added to Wikipedia.
🗓 We will meet on Monday, March 25th at 17:00 at Hollar (room H212). Some refreshments will be provided.
☕ The project is organized by Wikimedia Czech Republic and Students of IKSŽ. The project is financially supported by the US Embassy in the Czech Republic under the Small Grants Programme and the Academic Senate of FSV UK.
2024-03-14: President of Wikimedia CR for RESPEKT
[edit]Michal Reiter, Chairman of Wikimedia ČR, spoke with Štěpán Sedláček about the condition, functioning, and disputes on the Czech Wikipedia in the podcast of the weekly RESPEKT. What impact does this have on the content of the encyclopedia and how is the community trying to change this? Who is policing Wikipedia and how? What do the edit wars look like and what have they been fought over recently? How is Wikipedia both helped and threatened by the advent of AI in the form of large language models that are also learned from the encyclopedia's texts? Will Wikipedia continue to be free? And how can editing Wikipedia function like a tourist club for some people?" All that and more here.
Educational programs
[edit]2024-03-05: New course at secondary Vocational School Luhačovice started in February
[edit]On Wednesday, 28 February, the course We Write Wikipedia was launched at the Luhačovice Secondary Vocational School, the aim of which is to introduce students to Wikipedia as a tool for developing media literacy, but also to teach them how to write articles on Wikipedia. The course, led by Wikimedia CZ chief tutor Pavel Bednařík, will culminate in April with the completion of articles and publication on Wikipedia. In the introductory lecture, students learned about the basic rules of Wikipedia, the possibilities of editing and modifying articles, as well as the mechanisms of defending Wikipedia as a relevant source of information. The program is in charge of educator Anděla Krumpolcová and its implementation was supported by a grant from the OSF Foundation for the development of media education in libraries.
2024-03-19: UHK students write Wikipedia for the second year
[edit]For the second year in a row, it is possible to enrol in the Students Write Wikipedia course at the University of Hradec Králové. This is thanks to the main Wikimedia CR Wikirector Lukáš Nekolný. He works at the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové, which works closely with the UHK!
The course was attended by 13 students in the winter semester, whose articles can already be found in the main Wikipedia area. Published articles, such as Šrámek's Farm or Julius Russ, have even earned praise from the patrol and the administrators of the Czech Wikipedia. The articles were primarily focused on the territory of the Hradec Králové Region.
