[edit]2024-01-18: The seventh year of the Describe a Monument competition is here. What's new?
[edit]For the seventh time, the Describe a Monument competition started on the Czech Wikipedia. There are about forty thousand cultural monuments in the Czech Republic, but only a small part of them is documented in the largest Czech encyclopedia. And the competition is trying to change that!
It doesn't matter if it's city fortifications, important villas, bridges or even technical monuments – they all belong on Wikipedia. Thanks to Wikipedia, the remarkable stories of castles, houses and other buildings can come alive again.

2024-01-18: An evening of free culture will be dedicated to wiki residents, photos, and slam
[edit]The first program in January, which has traditionally been prepared by Wikimedia ČR for five years, is a social evening dedicated to debates, an exhibition and a slam. The Evening of Free Culture, as the evening is called this time, will present, among other things, the work of wiki-residents working in Czech cultural and memory institutions. The results of the Czech Wiki Photo 2023 competition will be announced and will be on display at the exhibition. At the end of the evening there will be a parade of young Czech slammers at the Wiki Slam.
The debate How we share or Free culture in the practice of public cultural and memory institutions will focus on making collections and databases accessible as part of the GLAM programme. The debate will feature representatives of cooperating institutions, but especially experienced and novice wiki-residents (among others from the State Regional Archives, the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové or the National Library).
Among the discussants are:
Vlastimil Slovák, Wikimedia ČR - introductory remarks
Jaroslav Zastoupil, State Regional Archive in Prague
Martin Sovák, State Regional Archive in Prague
Kristýna Juračková, Hradec Králové Museum
Dora Rodriguez, National Library
Štěpánka Edlová, National Library
Daniel Baránek, Institute of History of the CAS
The evening will take place from 16:00 in the Didaktikon of the Hybernská Campus. Admission is free, more information can be found on the website.

[edit]2024-01-03: The first Month of Seniors is over
[edit]31.12. was not only the end of 2023, but also of the first year of Senior Month! We would like to thank all of "our" seniors and lecturers who together make up the wonderful Seniors Write Wikipedia program.
In the last three months, the graduates of the Seniors Write Wikipedia courses have created 289 new articles. That's an absolutely amazing number!
We would also like to thank our donors, without whom the program would not be able to function in its current form. Thank you!
The Senior Campaign is over, but if you would still like to contribute to Wikimedia Czech Republic projects, you can do so through our ongoing campaign.
2024-01-15: Add one reference on Wikipedia and enter the competition!
[edit]1LIB1REF CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES!
[edit]Imagine a world where every librarian adds at least one reference to Wikipedia.
Like it? Come help us make this vision a reality!
Want to get involved? From 15 January - 5 February 2024, the #1Lib1Ref challenge will be open to librarians around the world. Not a librarian? That's okay! Because anyone can get involved.
What is the challenge? Post at least one Wikipedia reference!Any citation to a credible source will help Wikipedia readers around the world.
To be entered into the draw for Wikimedia-themed prizes, be sure to add the relevant "hashtag" in the summary of your edit. How to do it? Fill in the edit summary, write e.g. "adding a reference", and add the hashtag #1Lib1Ref.
This year you can also compete in the Central European Region competition! The winner will then receive a voucher for the international Wikistore. Just add a second hashtag: #1Lib1RefCEE. Are you up for it?
Why librarians? Who else but librarians are so well placed to maintain the quality of citations on the Czech Wikipedia - they are experts in searching and providing information, and in their work they work every day with books and journals, which are invaluable sources of information for Wikipedia.
The bi-annual campaign with #1Lib1Ref is run by the Wikimedia Foundation and supported by the Wikipedia Library Team and Wikimedia Affiliates worldwide. We also work closely with librarian communities locally and globally to promote the campaign.

2024-01-05: January Wikischool: Learn how to translate articles on Wikipedia.
[edit]What is Evening WikiSchool for seniors? It is a series of regular, specialised workshops aimed primarily at seniors, especially graduates of the beginner (and advanced) Seniors Writing Wikipedia (SePW) courses.
What does the Evening WikiSchool offer? It offers the opportunity to focus on developing the specific skills that a good Wikipedian needs to do their job. We will focus on techniques and tweaks that can be used in editing practice that are not covered in detail in the Seniors Write Wikipedia courses.
January's Wikischool will focus on a frequently used tool that helps to prepare quality articles on the Czech Wikipedia - the Translation tool. If you know at least one world language (it doesn't have to be English!), then you can take advantage of the features and functions of the translation tool. The translation tool (Content Translator) has some specifics and imperfections, which we will focus on in the practice-oriented Wikishop. We will also try out the basics of translating your article, which you can then publish on Wikipedia.
The online workshop - Evening Wikischool for Seniors: How to translate Wikipedia - will take place on Tuesday, 9 January 2024 from 17:00 to 18:30. You can sign up here, and find all the rest of the information and details there.
Don't hesitate to register, as the workshop has limited capacity.
Programs for partnerships
[edit]2024-01-16: Wikimedia at the Archives, Libraries, Museums in the Digital World 2023 conference
[edit]On Thursday, 30 November, Klára Joklová spoke at the conference Archives, Libraries, Museums in the Digital World 2023 on the topic of Wikimedia. She presented the current active cooperation of Wikimedia Czech Republic with cultural and educational institutions to make their data available under a free license in Wikimedia projects. Using several successful examples from the international GLAM project, she then showed further possibilities of cooperation and what the wiki world can offer institutions in their journey towards a common goal. The presentation is available on Wikimedia Commons under a CC BY 4.0 license.
2024-01-24: Do you already have a wiki-resident?
[edit]Since October 2023, regular meetings of the Wiki-residents of the institutions that have established this liaison officer in their institution have been in full swing. The topic of the wiki-residency was also discussed during the Evening of Free Culture, which took place on Friday 19 January 2024 at the Hybernská Campus. The guests present from the National Library of the Czech Republic, the State Regional Archive, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Library of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové confirmed that the interest in cooperation and establishing a position on both sides is important. The experience with the wiki-residency and the working conditions of the Wikipedians cooperating with the institutions will be discussed by the Manager of Programmes for Partnerships Pavel Bednařík and the wiki-resident Dora Rodriguez (National Library of the Czech Republic) also at theXXII Seminar of Libraries of Memory Institutions of the Zlín Region in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm on Wednesday 14 February. The presentation entitled Have you got your wiki-resident yet? is intended to motivate the library representatives to present to join the program and involve their wiki-resident in the work on Wikipedia and other projects.

[edit]2024-01-31: CEE Meeting 2023: A space for sharing experiences and building strategic collaborations
[edit]The Wikimedia CEE Meeting is an annual gathering of representatives of Wikimedia communities from Central and Eastern Europe. It is a unique opportunity to share experiences and build partnerships. It is particularly helpful for communities that are underrepresented in the wiki-world. This year, for the first time, the Wikimedia CEE Hub, a pilot project that celebrated its first year of operation in December, participated in its organisation. Wikimedia Czech Republic was represented at the conference by Executive Director Klára Joklová, Councillor Jan Groh and Tadeáš Bednarz. Thanks to a scholarship for young Wikimedians from the CEE Hub, they were joined by Jan Beranek, Coordinator of Programmes for Editors.
