2024-02-07: Meeting of young Wikimedians in Prague
[edit]In November 2023, the first face-to-face meeting of a group of young Wikimedians – CEE Youth – took place in Prague. This was coordinated by the CEE Hub team – Barbara Klen, Toni Ristovski, Klára Joklová, who initiated the project and guarantees it as a member of the steering committee, and Lucie Schubert, who coordinates a similar group in the Czech Republic.
Thus, 15 participants representing 8 communities from Central and Eastern Europe met in Prague. They made a plan of the group's activities for the next year, the division of its organisation among its members and the programme they want to prepare for the other young participants at the international Wikimania conference to be held next summer in Poland.

2024-02-06: We are opening a new Wikipedia course at Palacky University in Olomouc
[edit]At Palacký University in Olomouc, the Department of General Linguistics is launching a new course in the summer semester 2023/2024 with the acronym WIKI, which focuses on the use of Wikipedia for study. The course is intended for students in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in General Linguistics and related disciplines. It can be chosen as an elective by any student across the university.
The goal of the course is to introduce students to the rules and principles of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects, to learn and practice editing skills, and to produce an encyclopedia entry/article for Wikipedia during the semester. The passwords will be related to a knowledge database on linguistics and related topics. The passwords will be published on Wikipedia by the end of the semester under the supervision of the instructor. Prior knowledge in editing Wikipedia is not a prerequisite for participation in the course.
The form of instruction is face-to-face; please bring your own laptop. The readings for the course are listed on the course page on the STAG portal. The course will be held in a block on Thursdays from 15:00 to 17:00 in room 2.03 of the Department of General Linguistics. The instructor of the course is Mgr. Karel Čapka, who is a long-time Wikipedian and member of Wikimedia CR.
2024-02-28: How did the first challenge of this year #1Lib1Ref turn out?
[edit]From 15 January to 5 February 2024, another global challenge for librarians (and not only) took place. The #1Lib1Ref challenge aims to improve the content of Wikipedia articles by adding references to individual entries.
1Lib1Ref is running in all countries around the world to encourage librarians to follow the example of encyclopaedists by contributing at least one reference to existing articles. On the Czech Wikipedia, a total of 13 users participated this time, and they edited a total of 171 references. Every user who participated also took home a prize!
Among the articles where references were added are, for example, the entry on Cyril and Methodius or the left-handedness.
The following users were selected from among the participants of this year's first challenge, who will also take home small prizes from the competition:
- Aktron
- KKDAII
- The Subterranean
- Meloun1212
- Mojmir Churavy
Many thanks to all the participating editors and congratulations to the winners.
The next #1Lib1Ref challenge will run from May 15 to June 5, 20
