Wikimedia Community User Group Malta/Wiki Indaba

At WikiIndaba 2023, which took place in Morocco on 3-5 November, Wikimedia Community User Group Malta proposed potential collaborations with affiliates based in Africa. This page has been created to follow up on the workshop presented there by Toni Sant.

The intention of these prospective collaborations is to explore intercultural dialogues between African Wikimedia affiliates and the Malta Wikimedia affiliate towards a broadening of understandings of Africa in Europe and vice versa.

What can we do to develop this?

Some of the ideas proposed as possible ways to collaborate include:

• A focus on specific aspects of Wiki Loves Monuments, potentially creating common areas of interest, such as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
• Article editing events (edit-a-thons) or contest (à la CEE Spring) exploring specific topics, such as superstitions, food and other aspects of folk life, which can potentially be channeled through Wiki Loves Folklore and/or Feminism and Folklore.

Please indicate below whether you have an idea you'd like to share for exploration towards a potential project. Simply write a sentence or two outlining your idea and make sure to sign it ( ~~~~ ) so we know who to contact to follow up on this.

It is envisioned that all the ideas shared here will be pooled at Wikimania 2024 and/or WikiIndaba 2024 towards an activity (or activities) in 2025.

• One idea I'm interested in exploring is a simple edit-a-thon of notable people in Malta with a connection in Nigeria. This includes the Maltese-Nigerian singer Destiny and her footballer father Ndubisi Chukunyere. --ToniSant (talk) 14:01, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

  Hello @ToniSant. Let's start with the idea we discussed of making a list of 10 important topics that do not have an article in the other wiki. We can set up a meeting in December for a live edit-a-thon launch, and then later expand from there. I can for example suggest these topics not present in mtwiki, which are listed as "top importance" in the WikiProject Morocco on enwiki:

  • Standard Moroccan Amazigh
  • Tangier
  • History of Morocco
  • Moroccan architecture
  • Moroccan cuisine
  • Moroccans
  • Almoravid dynasty
  • Ibn Battuta
  • University of al-Qarawiyyin

  Hello @ToniSant. Thanks for the list! I think on our side everyone will be busy with finalizing this year's projects until mid December. I will make a post on our Telegram arywiki group and see who's on board, and when is the best time for them. I will let you know as soon as we have agreed on a date range. As I said during the workshop in Morocco, I think this would be best placed as an event during Wiki Loves Folklore 2024, or more specifically as part of the Feminism & Folklore 2024 article writing contest.
