- Could you give a short overview of the time path of the founding up to now?
The first meetings took place between 2008 and 2010 and finally in June 2010, the attending group decided to pursue the foundation of the chapter. We registered at that time the domain wikimediachile.cl with our own funds to keep it free of other interests (currently wikipedia.cl and wikimedia.cl are registered by unknown people not related to the project, but haven't been used in a wrong way yet). The bylaws were drafted by one of the members and reviewed in the private mailing list by the supporters. In October 2010, the original draft in Spanish was published in Meta and they were translated to English; the English version was finished in December 31st, 2010. The bylaws were presented to the ChapCom in January 9th, 2011. - Have there been any activities/meetings etc. of this group of people?
The first meetings of Chilean wikipedians took place in February 2008, in Concepción and Santiago the same weekend. Four other meetings has taken place in Santiago, and three will be hosted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Wikipedia (Santiago, Concepción and Valparaíso-Viña del Mar). In a meeting in July 2010, the decision to pursue the foundation of Wikimedia Chile was taken.
Other activities have taken place: there have been workshops about Wikipedia in the University of Chile and one of our members is teaching about Wikipedia to the workers of the Library of the National Congress. We have established contacts with Derechos Digitales, a nonprofit corporation about digital rights and representative in the country of Creative Commons, and with other organizations like the Ministry of Economy and Promotion. A member of the supporting group also participates as a delegate of Wiki[pm]edians in ProComún, an iniciative to support free knowledge movements in Chile. - What kind of activities are planned for the future in the chapter?
We expect to organize more events to strength the Chilean community of Wiki[pm]edians and promote our projects in different places. We want, for example, to organize workshops inside schools or universities to teach about using Wikipedia. Also, we want to sign agreements with different GLAM organizations in the country; the successful experiences with the Library of the Congress are good examples). Finally, we expect to promote the use of minority languages (Mapudungun, Aymara and Rapa Nui). Currently, we are in talks with Wikimedia Argentina about the participation of Chile in a Latin American meeting in 2011. - Do you have an overview of how many Wikimedians would like to join the chapter when founded?
We expect around 30 members to join in the first months of the chapter. - Have the bylaws been reviewed by a lawyer/specialist?
The bylaws were drafted by a lawyer (also a member of the supporting group) and have been reviewed by members of Derechos Digitales. The bylaws were based in the standard bylaws proposed by the Ministry of Justice of Chile and the National Council of Culture and the Arts.
