Wikimedia CH/Micro Grant/Portable scanning station
Please provide the following information for your micro-grant request:
Your Username: User:Civvì, User:Yiyi and User:CristianNX
Your Country of residence: Italy
Amount requested: 343 CHF (scanner 268 CHF + trolley 50 CHF + around 25 CHF Polyurethane for packaging)
Planned activity: We want to create a "portable scanning station", this means basically a quite small book scanner which can be safely put into a rigid trolley generously padded in packaging polyurethane so that the whole can be safely moved and used in different libraries and occasions.
People involved
(e.g. How many people can benefit from the micro grant you request):
From June 11th to 15th we will have 11 high school students in the library of a small town in the hills above the Lago Maggiore working on contents connected with the geography of the surrounding area. From October we will do the same in another town.
In these small libraries we found an interesting amount of old books - not present in Internet Archive - regarding the history of the surroundings of the Lake (Tessin included), the Ossola valley, the history of the Simplon and the history of the routes traversing the Alps. These small libraries do not have scanners, (they barely have a pc...) and these books, some of them quite antique, are not free for lending but only for consultation on site.
We have contacts with other libraries that have several ancient books in their archives:
- Biblioteca Capitolare di San Giovanni Battista in Busto Arsizio, with books concerning Busto Arsizio and it’s Pieve;
- Esino Lario library, with book related to the provinces of Lecco, Como, Sondrio, Varese and others.
- Istituto storico della Resistenza di Novara asked us for help to digitalize some books they own the copyright which are not going to be reprinted
It's quite difficult to quantify the number of people who will benefit but just for the start we are going to digitalize some books who are present only in a small amount of local libraries but are written by well known scientists and historicians from the past centuries.
Please explain what influence your activity will have on Wikimedia Projects
(e.g. quantitative: number of new pictures uploaded to commons, no of new articles created / qualitative: strengthen the community of german-speaking wikipedia authors etc,):
The scanning station can be used in a lot of places and we expect to work for a long long time with it. Only in the first week with the students we have planned to scan at least 5 books, we have to evaluate the time needed to determine how much more we can do with their help just in that week but we have an intense working plan for the “station”...
