Wikimedia CH/Micro-Grant/Swaziland Wikipedia Community Service

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Please provide the following information for your micro-grant request:

Your Username: dcolhoun

Your Country of residence: Swaziland

Amount requested: 100CHF This will cover the cost of an external hard disk containing offline Wikipedia for installation at the school for students to test and use

Planned activity: The school I work for Waterford Kamhlaba (www.waterford.sz) runs community service projects with communities throughout Swaziland. A new project I have started this year focuses on getting final year students to review current Wikipedia entries on Swaziland and create new ones. This ties in with their academic research activities which are core to the International Baccalaureate program. Online Wikipedia will allow students to get familiar with the structure and content within Wikipedia, so that we can then accomplish the second part of the project which involves getting offline Wikipedia to schools in Swaziland with no access to the internet. Internet in Swaziland is expensive and difficult to access in rural areas.

We would select a few pilot schools and then get offline Wikipedia installed and running in those schools. Many of these schools also struggle to provide books to all students, so access to Wikipedia would greatly assist them

People involved
To begin 3 students from Waterford then growing into 2 schools of approximately 300 students each. Once the pilot with the 2 schools is complete we would look to provide Wikipedia offline to all schools that are interested

Please explain what influence your activity will have on Wikimedia Projects
(e.g. quantitative: number of new pictures uploaded to commons, no of new articles created / qualitative: strengthen the community of german-speaking wikipedia authors etc,): The online editting by students at Waterford I see growing to not only include Swaziland but entries for many countries around the world. We have 60+ nationalities here and much excitement has been shown with this project. The initial focus will be Swaziland with 20+ new entries and accompanying photographs
