Abstract:

Wikibase is a free and open source software for managing information that can be collaboratively edited and read by humans and by computers, translated into multiple languages and shared with the rest of the world as part of the Linked Open Data web. Research and Cultural Sector organizations increasingly work with Wikibase to create and manage their own linked open knowledge bases. Its flexibility allows curators, archivists, designers and researchers to create complex databases and to connect their data with other knowledge bases around the world. This workshop will provide an introduction to wikibase and its users and will introduce participants to some basic functionalities.

This workshop will provide an introduction to Wikibase, a free and open software which could benefit a wide range of organizations and institutions (GLAM, Researchers etc), as well as it could provide them with avenues to contribute to Open Knowledge. Several institutions in CEE region are working with Linked Open Data (Wikidata and Wikibase), and we hope that this workshop will help build capacity for Wikimedians to further support and built partnerships with organizations and institutions in the region, to enable them to opening and linking their data and collections.
