Abstract:

This year marks the third year of the WikiStipendiya edit-a-thon, a collaborative effort led by the Uzbek Language User Group in partnership with the Youth Affairs Agency of Uzbekistan. The project has utilized diverse strategies, which range from emphasizing individual contributions to fostering collaborative work. Notably, the edit-a-thon has garnered unprecedented attention in Uzbekistan, highlighted by extensive coverage in major publications throughout its duration. It has also spawned a new generation of committed Wikimedians. Despite these successes, the organizers have encountered challenges such as overreliance on machine translation by new users and burnout among the organizers. This presentation will delve into these experiences, outline future plans, and address strategies for overcoming challenges.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

The proposed presentation project holds significant relevance for the CEE/CA Region for several key reasons. Firstly, it offers valuable insights for groups interested in effective collaboration with government entities, particularly in regions where financial resources for such initiatives are limited. Secondly, feedback from participants regarding copyright, machine translation, and AI would provide actionable lessons for navigating these complex issues, which are pertinent not only to the WikiStipendiya project but also to numerous other initiatives within CEE/CA. Lastly, the diverse range of sub-projects under WikiStipendiya, including Wiki Women and Wikipedia in Education, mirrors initiatives already underway in CEE, such as the CEE Spring, highlighting shared objectives and potential avenues for collaboration and knowledge exchange.
