Abstract:

Crimean Tatars are the indigenous people of Ukraine, whose representatives during the last ten years of occupation of Crimea are forced to live outside their home, and those remaining in occupied Crimea are under constant pressure. Therefore, it is so important to preserve and popularize the Crimean Tatar language and culture. Wikimedia Ukraine is organizing an online marathon for the second time to write articles on the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia. Being on the organizing committee, I want to share results of the marathon, its challenges and prospects in Ukraine, as well as my own conclusions.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

To preserve and popularize languages and cultures that are in danger of extinction (especially during war), it is important to develop small language chapters of Wikipedia. This is, in particular, the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia. Anyone who is interested in the culture of the Crimean Tatars and its representation on Wikipedia will find out during my presentation the specifics of organizing the wikimarathon in the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia and will be able to implement similar practices in their countries and/or communities.
