Abstract (up to 100 words)

I propose to demonstrate and teach the use of several intermediate tools for contributing to Wikidata (and to Wikipedia through Wikidata). Basic familiarity with Wikidata will be assumed in this session. (To benefit, attendees should understand labels, descriptions, items, properties, and values.)

As time permits, I'll try to cover:

  • Cradle
  • Tabernacle
  • Wikimedia Cultural Diversity Observatory (WCDO)
  • Listeria
  • Wikidata-Editing Framework (WE-F)
  • Mix 'n' Match
  • MBabel
  • QuickStatements
How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of Central and Eastern Europe?

Now that CEE communities have broadly embraced Wikidata, sophisticated workflows can be developed on top of Wikidata, increasing efficiency and total contribution.

Special requirements

Projector.

Notes

[edit]
  • What is Wikidata?
    • a central editable repository of structured linked data.
  • Structured date is where every piece of information is described as a triple - subject, predicate, object or on Wikidata: item, property, value
    • qualifiers
    • references
  • Wikidate has many uses:
  1. Can be described in detail or not.
  2. Can be transcribed in different languages.
  3. Can be centralised to avoid duplicate effort. We can connect disperate IDs to align datasets.
  4. Wikidata can serve as discovery platforms for data elswhere
  5. Massively multilingual aligned vocabularies
  • You get what you ask on the Wikidata.
  • Towards the end of Wikidata page you have the list of items.
  • You can search things easily. Wikidata will even give you charts for your search. Wikidata can show you the coverages in different parts of the world. Coordinats are important.
  • Wikigenoms.org is a site made by genetics. It is a site that drowns its info directly from Wikidata. This is an application made on top of Wikidata. Platform that is more convenient for users to use.
  • Crotos art browser: http://zone47.com/crotos/?l=en
  • Scholia is a tool to explore scholarly works and publications. This pulls the information from WIkidata. Can show you the comparisson between different things. Bear in mind that it shows the data from Wikidata (some things may not have data coverage on Wikidata).
  • Questions / interests of the audience:
  • How to explore Wikidata:
  1. Wikipedia tools for Google Sheets - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_and_Wikidata_Tools - useful for tabula data, get automated reports / How to: Open google sheets, from Add-ons add Wikipedia tools. Once installed in the Add-ons part you will have Show documentation. These tools add functions to the spreadsheet. This is very helpful if you have many things to search for.
  2. Wikidata Query - (video tutorial is in the presentation) this is good for data quality, maintenance. You can see here the things that can be improved.
  3. WCDO - Wikimedia Cultural Diversity Observatory - https://wcdo.wmflabs.org/ - the idea is to shed light on content gaps. The algorithm can show you the resaults on how something is or it is not covered in one country or in one language. Very useful tool for CEE Spring and edithathons.
    1. CCC Spread - how spread is your content in other languages. This is very helpful to find out what needs to be worked on.This can show you which other Wikipedia's have coverage on the desired topics and how much it is.
  4. Wikidata lists (Listeria) - a template on Wiki that allows you to specify the Wikidata query and the properties that you like. A bot automatically updates pages on Wikipedia with tables. This is suitable for projects more. You can add a working list that will be inserted on a Wikipedia page. Once some completes the thing on the list, next time the bot runs it will disappear.
  • How to contribute to Wikidata:
  1. Edit Wikidata directly from Wikipedia - there is an Add-on for it (link in the presentation)
  2. Cradle - good for organised data entry - it creates easy input forms for creating new items. The tool gives you the opportunity to design the form. All you need to do is edit a page from Wikidata to make a spesific form. The link is in the tool. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Cradle
  3. Tabernacle - a tool for editing Wikidata like a spreadsheet. This is helpful if you need a set of items in a table. You need to load the tool (link in the presentation). You start by clicking New.
  4. QuickStatements - mass entry on Wikidata
