Project information
[edit]- What is the main goal of your project?
- The main goal of the project is to attract and train 10 new Wikipedians to CEECA language community from the LGBTQ+ community, motivating them to actively participate in the wiki movement. This will be achieved through a series of trainings and contest events held during month and half.
- At the moment, there is a significant lack of reliable information on LGBTQ+ topics in CEECA language Wikimedia platforms. One of the reasons is the high level of conservatism in society, due to which access is limited. The lack of information leads to the spread of stereotypes and misinformation, and makes it difficult to access objective data even on Wikipedia.
- The project addresses this problem by creating a safe learning environment for members of the LGBTQ+ community to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia anonymously and without risk. The training will include hands-on sessions on editing, writing, and using reliable sources.
- To keep participants motivated, a mini-competition for creating new articles will be organised. This will not only increase their engagement, but also greatly expand the available information on the topic.
- In addition, this project is a pilot one. Its implementation will make it possible to analyse the most effective approaches and promising directions for further development of similar initiatives in CEECA. In case of successful experience, it can be scaled up and adapted for other countries in the region.
- Describe which activities you plan to implement
- Planned activities:
- Two-day training session on Wikipedia editing (beginning April 2025)
- Participants: 10 people, mostly from the LGBTQ+ community.
- Training topics: Introduction to the Wikimovement: what it is and why it is important to participate.
- Wikipedia editing basics: how to create, edit and format articles. The importance of using credible sources.
- Security and anonymity when editing, especially for vulnerable groups.
- Overview of other Wikimedia projects (Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, etc.).
- Format: interactive lectures, practical exercises, question and answer sessions.
- Contest for creating and translating articles on LGBTQ+ topics (all April 2025)
- Period: 2 weeks after the training.
- Participants' task: to write or translate articles related to LGBTQ+ history, rights, culture and other relevant aspects.
- Evaluation of works: by the quantity and quality of the articles created.
- Prizes: monetary or technical rewards (e.g. mobile internet packages, handy devices) to encourage further participation in the wiki movement.
- Photo walk to a cultural place and uploading images to Wikimedia Commons (mid-May 2025)
- Purpose: To introduce participants to another aspect of the wiki movement - the free distribution of multimedia content.
- Format: field trip to a historical or cultural site followed by uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons, location TBD.
- Practical benefit: learning to work with Wikimedia Commons, expanding the base of free images.
- This project will create conditions for the involvement of new editors in CEECA Wikipedia, improve the quality and accessibility of information on LGBTQ+ topics and become a pilot initiative for further research and expansion in CEECA.
