Collaboration with Eurasia International University

[edit]

On September 15, in cooperation with Wikimedia Armenia and Eurasia International University, a course on Wikipedia for students from Eurasia University’s Management Department was launched. According to the arrangement, the course is an obligatory part of the curriculum for the fourth year students, and is an internship for the second and third year students.

Within the framework of the course held at the office of Wikimedia Armenia, the students were introduced to the basic tools of Wikipedia and to uploading pictures on Wikimedia Commons. Besides becoming familiar with the principles of Wikipedia, fourth-year students should edit two articles, one by their own choice and the other by the decision of the chair. The articles concerning their field of study were reviewed and evaluated by the lecturers of the department. In total, five fourth-graders participated in the training. As a result, seven articles were improved and one new article was created.

Although the course was intended to be an internship opportunity for the second and third year students, the students did not attend the course regularly. Despite the drawbacks, the course will be improved and the cooperation will be continuous.

Wikidoctor Project

[edit]

A number of members of the organization, who are also undergraduate students at Yerevan Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi, have organized and conducted a Wikipedia course for students from the above-mentioned university and representatives of the health sector. The purpose of the course is to enrich the Armenian Wikipedia with high quality and reliable medical articles and to involve more representatives from this field in this process.

During the course, participants were introduced to the basic tools and principles of Wikipedia and edited articles, mainly by selecting them from the list of "1000 Most Important Medical Articles". More than 113 people applied for the course, but as a result of the selection, the number of participants was 30. During the first stage, the participants learned about the basics of Wikipedia. As a part of the second stage, they were assigned two articles which they should finish by the end of January. The results, advantages and disadvantages of the project will be available during the next period.

Training for Trainers

[edit]

Wikimedia Armenia started a new course called “Training for Trainers” which aims at preparing a group of people who know, understand and process Wikipedia and sister projects by having a thorough and deep knowledge about them. Anyone can use Wikipedia and other projects but not everyone is an expert on every tool that exists in these projects. Therefore, by “Training for Trainers” course Wikimedia Armenia is intended to expand the number of experts in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Taking into consideration the interest and desire of different educational, cultural and other institutions to develop Wikipedia in different formats and to include it in their curriculum, this project seems very relevant.

Due to the demand, Wikimedia Armenia carried out the first “Training for Trainers” course in December. It was a three-day training that took place in Tsaghkadzor. Around ninety people applied for the course but only fifty of them had the chance to participate in the course. There was no age limit for the participants so there were both adults and teens. The course had a unique format; the participants had to present their knowledge about Wikipedia and other projects and due to the discussion fill the gaps of their knowledge. The agenda comprised of several questions:

  • The ideology of the Wikimedia movement
  • Wikipedia and its tools
  • Wikisource and its tools
  • Participation in community life
  • Copyright in Wikimedia projects
  • Wikidata and its tools
  • Wikimedia Commons and its tools

Due to the course a lot of community members developed their knowledge and deepened their understanding of the Wikimedia projects. As the first course was a success, it will be continuous.

Awards ceremony of the “Wiki Loves Monuments 2019” contest

[edit]

In September Wikimedia Armenia participated in the annual “Wiki Loves Monuments” photo contest. After a successful ending of the contest with around 21000 photos uploaded in Wikimedia Commons, Wikimedia Armenia decided that this year the awards ceremony should be a separate event and a much bigger one compared to previous years. The awards ceremony took place on the 28th of December. There were around forty people attending the award ceremony, mainly people who participated in the “Wiki Loves Monuments” photo contest and uploaded photos.

There were three national media representatives attending the event who commentated on the ceremony on national television. Participants of the project presented the trips in which they participated and showed several photos of their destination. There were several nominations - 200-400 uploads, 401-1000 uploads, 1001 and above uploads and the top ten photos. After the presentation, all the active participants were granted their certificates and the authors of the top ten photos were awarded their presents.
