Participación en Wikimanía 2013
Como todos los años, en los primeros días de agosto participamos del congreso anual que reúne a wikimedistas de todo el mundo. 10 wikipedistas provenientes de Argentina participaron en el congreso, un récord de participación desde nuestro país (descontando la edición 2009, que se realizó en Buenos Aires). Wikimedia Argentina apoyó directamente la participación de tres socios nuestros.
Los temas tratados en las diferentes presentaciones atravesaron los ejes más importantes del movimiento en todo el mundo: debate sobre la dirección de la Fundación Wikimedia para los próximos años, presentaciones sobre actividades de capítulos locales en todo el mundo, perspectiva para países en desarrollo. También se hicieron evaluaciones del editor visual (cuya versión beta ya se ha implementado en Wikipedia), uno de los avances técnicos más importantes en extensión del alcance editorial de Wikipedia.
Wikimedia Argentina participó en diversas actividades con otros capítulos de la región en el marco de la iniciativa Iberocoop, delineando algunas oportunidades de desarrollo para los próximos meses, y cuya discusión continuará en la reunión que se realizará en Ciudad de México el próximo mes de octubre. Wikimedia Argentina contó en conjunto con Iberocoop un pequeño stand en el llamado Chapters Village y además fue realizada una ponencia sobre el concurso Mujeres Iberoamericanas.
Nueva web de Wikimedia Argentina
Luego de un mes de trabajo, Wikimedia Argentina lanzó su nuevo sitio web, con una fuerte apuesta gráfica y nuevas secciones. Esta nueva plataforma permite una sección especial para los eventos de la organización, con herramientas que permiten una identificación fácil en el calendario y también compartirlos en las redes sociales, con el fin de potenciar la participación de socios y voluntarios en nuestras actividades.
Un encabezado destaca las noticias principales y también los proyectos del movimiento a nivel nacional e internacional que tienen más visibilidad. Esperamos con esta nueva herramienta lograr una mejor comunicación con nuestros socios (quienes también pueden utilizarla para difundir sus proyectos y actividades), y la comunidad que se acerca a Wikimedia Argentina.

Charlas sobre el Proyecto de Escáneres
El martes 20 de agosto, Wikimedia Argentina realizó una presentación en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires sobre el proyecto de escáneres construidos artesanalmente (DIY Scanner) que ha llevado a cabo nuestra Asociación con algunas instituciones en los últimos años. La charla fue realizada por Daniel Reetz, creador del proyecto DIY Scanner, quien contó su experiencia y charló sore la relación entre digitalización, dominio público y nuevas tecnologías. El jueves 22 de agosto, Reetz participó en la Cumbre Global de Creative Commons y al día siguiente realizó una charla similar en la Bilbioteca de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación (FAHCE) de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata.
En el último año, Wikimedia Argentina ha apoyado los procesos de digitalización de material académico e histórico que poseen diversas instituciones argentinas y ha fomentado su carga en Wikimedia Commons y Wikisource. Mientras la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UBA ha utilizado su propio escáner, la Biblioteca de FAHCE cuenta con un escáner construido por Wikimedia Argentina y entregado en comodato. A la fecha, 71 documentos han sido digitalizados y cargados en Wikimedia Commons para su libre uso por estas y otras instituciones.
Cumbre Global de Creative Commons
La Cumbre Global de Creative Commons se organizó este año en Argentina, por Wikimedia Argentina y la Fundación Vía Libre (quienes representan en conjunto a Creative Commons en la Argentina). Se constituyó así la primera edición de este congreso en un país de habla hispana. La cumbre reunió a las instituciones afiliadas de Creative Commons de todo el mundo junto a los miembros del directorio de CC, su staff, colegas, representantes locales y otros interesados en el presente y futuro de la cultura libre.
Los participantes discutieron estrategias para fortalecer Creative Commons y su comunidad mundial, se hicieron presentaciones sobre los últimos desarrollos en el movimiento a nivel global y muchos voluntarios tuvieron la oportunidad de exponer proyectos locales e internacionales que utilizan las licencias Creative Commons. Entre el 21 y el 24 de agosto, más de 300 personas circularon por el Centro Cultural General San Martín, la sede principal de las conferencias.
El viernes 23 de agosto tuvo lugar uno de los acontecimientos más esperados de la cumbre: la presentación de Lawrence Lessig, que llamó la atención sobre las limitaciones de la licencia copyright en los procesos creativos que tienen lugar actualmente. Lessig, además, planteó las preguntas y problemáticas principales del debate sobre derechos de autor y difusión, y propuso los aspectos centrales a tener en cuenta en las propuestas de reforma al derecho de autor. Concursos literarios de la provincia
Wikimedia Argentina ha promovido una serie de concursos literarios de obras originales, organizados por la Dirección de Bibliotecas y Promoción de la Lectura de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. Esta serie está compuesta por el III Concurso Nacional de Ensayo “Arturo Jauretche”, el III Concurso Nacional de Teatro “Enrique Santos Discépolo” y el VII Concurso Nacional de Cuento para Jóvenes Narradores “Haroldo Conti”. Las obras podrán ser remitidas desde el 18 de julio al 18 de octubre.
Los ganadores no sólo tendrán premio en efectivo, sino que las 15 mejores obras serán editadas en una compilación, cuya edición digital será publicada en Wikimedia Commons y Wikisource en español. Las bases están disponibles en nuestro sitio web.
El apoyo a estos concursos se da en el marco del convenio de cooperación firmado entre Wikimedia Argentina y el Instituto Cultural de la Provincia de Buenos Aires.
Conferencia en la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba
En el marco del acuerdo con la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, el jueves 29 de agosto se llevó adelante la charla “Licencias libres y acceso al conocimiento en la Universidad”, a cargo de Evelin Heidel y Beatriz Busaniche, socias de Wikimedia Argentina. El encuentro fue organizado por el Área de Tecnología Educativa de la Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades y Wikimedia Argentina.

Wikimania 2013
As in previous editions, we took part at the international summit that unites Wikimedians all over the world. This 2013 edition witnessed the record of Argentinian participants, with 10 representatives, the largest number ever to attend a Wikimania (not counting the 2009 edition, held in Buenos Aires). Wikimedia Argentina supported the participation of 3 members of the association.
The topics addressed in the different presentations run through the most important topics of the movement, including for example the Wikimedia Foundation's strategy for developing countries, activities from local chapters all over the world, and the road ahead for the movement in the following years. Some technical breakthroughs were also addressed, like the visual editor project from the Editor Engagement Team.
Wikimedia Argentina participated in several activities with other Ibero American groups, as part of the Iberocoop initiative. Some opportunities for cooperation were drafted and will be developed further in the summit to be held in Mexico City next October. Wikimedia Argentina participated with other Iberocoop members in a small stand at the Chapters Village and also gave a presentation about the Mujeres Iberoamericanas contest.
New website for Wikimedia Argentina
After a month's work, we launched our new website, with a strong graphic identity and new sections. This new platform has a special section for the organization's events, including them in a calendar and tools to share them more easily, engaging better with our members and volunteers.
A header highlights the most important news, and the projects we develop are more visible now as well. We hope that this new platform allows a better communication with our members (also, allowing them to promote their own projects and activities, as long as they are in line with the organization's goals) and with the general public that approaches Wikimedia Argentina for more information.

Conferences about Digitization Project
On Tuesday, August 20th, Wikimedia Argentina made a presentation at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Buenos Aires about the digitalization program based on do-it-yourself scanners that our Association has conducted with other institutions in the past year. Daniel Reetz, creator of the DIY Book Scanner Project, shared his experience and discussed the relationship between digitization, public domain and new technologies. On Thursday August 22, Reetz made a presentation at the Creative Commons Global Summit and the next day held a similar talk on the Library of the Faculty of Humanities and Education (FaHCE) of the National University of La Plata.
In the past year, Wikimedia Argentina has supported digitization of academic and historical material possessed by various Argentine institutions and has promoted their upload to Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource. While the Faculty of Arts of the UBA has used its own scanner, FaHCE Library has a scanner built by Wikimedia Argentina and delivered on a free loan. The DIY scanners are devices easily put together with prefabricated parts that allows anyone to scan books and documents at a low cost. To date, 71 documents have been digitized and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for free use by these and other institutions.
Creative Commons Global Summit
The Creative Commons Global Summit was held this year in Argentina and was organized jointly by Wikimedia Argentina and Fundación Vía Libre (who together represent Creative Commons in the country). It was the first edition of this conference on a Spanish-speaking country. The summit brought together the Creative Commons affiliates from around the world along with the CC board members, their staff, colleagues, representatives and others interested in the present and future of free culture.
Participants discussed strategies for strengthening Creative Commons and its global community and made several presentations on the latest developments in the global movement, while many volunteers had the opportunity to expose local and international projects using Creative Commons licenses. Between August 21 and 24, more than 300 people participated at the San Martin Cultural Center, the main venue of the conference.
On Friday August 23, the most anticipated events of the summit took place: the presentation of Lawrence Lessig, who drew attention to the copyright license limitations currently taking place in creative processes. Lessig also raised questions and key issues of the debate on copyright and outreach, and proposed key aspects to be considered in proposals for copyright reform. Literary contests in Buenos Aires Province
Wikimedia Argentina is supporting a series of literary contests organized by the Direction of Libraries and Reading Promotion of the Buenos Aires Province. These contests consist of the 3rd. "Arturo Jauretche" National Essay Contest, the 3rd. "Enrique Santos Discépolo" National Drama Contest and the VII "Haroldo Conti" National Contest for Young Story-tellers. Works can be submitted from July 18th to October 18th.
The winners will not only have a prize money: the 15 best works will be published in a collection whose digital edition will also be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and Spanish Wikisource. Rules are available on our website (only in Spanish).
Support for these contests is given in the framework of the cooperation agreement signed between Wikimedia Argentina and the Cultural Institute of the Buenos Aires Province.
Conference at the National University of Córdoba
As part of our collaboration agreement with the National University of Córdooba, on Thursday August 29th, the conference "Free licences and access to knowledge at the university" was presented by Evelin Heidel and Beatriz Busaniche, members of Wikimedia Argentina. The summit was organized by the Education Technology Area of the institution and the local chapter.
