Exitoso Editatón para la Memoria
El sábado 20 de julio llevamos adelante el tercer maratón de edición: el Editatón para la Memoria, que organizamos junto a Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos en la antigua sede de la ESMA. El objetivo del encuentro fue completar la información sobre el complejo en Wikipedia y Wikimedia Commons, con tres ejes: la ESMA como escuela militar, como centro clandestino de detención y como espacio de recuperación de la memoria.
El encuentro, que inició a las 11 am, comenzó con un recorrido histórico por el complejo, aunque sólo se concentró en uno de los edificios, el Casino de Oficiales, que durante la última dictadura militar funcionó como centro clandestino de detención. Fue un encuentro muy rico, en el que pudimos reunir a más de 40 personas, entre los que contamos a antiguos estudiantes de la ESMA, personas que trabajan para la promoción de los derechos humanos y hasta nos acompañó un sobreviviente del centro.
El equipo de Espacio Memoria compartió material bibliográfico que fue un gran aporte para completar la información en Wikipedia. Actualmente se pueden leer los artículos sobre la ESMA, otro sobre la ESMA como centro clandestino de detención, Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos, y un tercero sobre Centros Clandestinos de Detención en nuestro país. Además, se solicitó la creación de un artículo que describa la historia de la Escuela de Mecánica de la Armada, de la que no contamos con mucha información. Además, al encuentro asistió Mónica Hasenberg, fotógrafa y militante por los derechos humanos, y dueña de una archivo de circa 45.000 fotografías de marchas y protestas en nuestro país. Vuelve Wiki Loves Monuments Argentina
Luego de la exitosa primera edición en 2012, este año volvimos a lanzar la edición argentina de Wiki Loves Monuments, el concurso de foto más grande del mundo. Actualmente hay más de mil monumentos y sitios históricos que se pueden fotografiar para presentarse al concurso, además de que esperamos poder expandir la lista en las próximas semanas. Lanzamos Wiki Loves Monuments Antarctica
Con el objetivo de alcanzar todos los continentes con el concurso de foto más grande del mundo, en WM-AR nos propusimos llevar el concurso a la Antártida. Luego de cerrar un acuerdo de colaboración con la Secretaría del Tratado Antártico, lanzamos la competencia públicamente. El objetivo es convocar a distintos capítulos como organizadores, en línea con la política de cooperación internacional que gobierna la Antártida, y actuar como coordinadores.
Publicamos la Memoria Anual 2012
Luego de reunir las actividades y acontecimientos más significativos de 2012, logramos consolidar un informe anual ilustrado con fotos, gráficos y textos que dan cuenta del gran crecimiento de nuestra organización el año pasado. El documento está disponible para consulta en Commons, y también estará disponible en papel. Enviaremos una copia por correo a cada socio. Es gracias al compromiso de todos los voluntarios que logramos llegar tan lejos. Esperamos que nos sigan acompañando en los proyectos que vendrán.

Successful Memorial Edit-a-thon
On Saturday, July 20th, in spite of the cold, over 40 people took part in Memorial Edit-a-thon, held in Buenos Aires in what used to be a “black site” (clandestine detention facility) during the last military dictatorship in Argentina. The aim of the meet up was to write about this space with three main focus: as a military school, as clandestine detention facility and as a space for recovering memory and promoting Human Rights.
The meeting, which started at 11 am, kickoff with a historical tour through the facilities. It focused specifically on the building where the black site was located, as well as the historic events and practices that made it one of the worse destinations for illegal prisoners, back then known as “desaparecidos” (“disappeared,” since there was no official record of their whereabouts). The turnout was one of the highest ever, with more than 40 people showing up to take part in the event. The meeting was very rich, because we managed to bring together people from different backgrounds: former students from the military school, people who work for the promotion of Human Rights and even a person who survived the black site.
The team at Espacio Memoria shared a number of publications that were a great help to complete the information published in Wikipedia. Now there are more specific articles, such as the one about ESMA, one specific of the space as a black site, one brand new for Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos, and a third one about black sites in our country. On top of that, a new article was solicited, about the history of the Army's Mechanic School, of which there's little information available. Furthermore, a new editor attended the Edit-a-thon: Mónica Hasenberg, a photographer and Human Rights activist that owns a photo archive of over 45 000 images portraying protests and human rights claim in our country. Wiki Loves Monuments Argentina
After a successful first edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in Argentina, this year we launched the second edition of the local contest. There are currently more than a thousand monuments and historic sites that can be photographed for the contest. We expect to be able to expand this list in the next few weeks. You can follow all the news on the argentinean edition of the competition on the contest's site.
We launched Wiki Loves Monuments Antarctica
With the aim of bringing Wiki Loves Monuments to all continents, WM-AR decided to take the contest to Antarctica. We closed a new collaboration agreement with the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, that gave us institutional support. The aim is to call other Wikimedia chapters to co-organize the contest, along the line of international cooperation policy that govern Antarctica, in a context where WM-AR would act as coordinator.
We published the Annual Report 2012
After recounting all the activities and the most significant events of 2012, we managed to bring forward an annual report illustrated with good quality pictures, graphics and texts that account for the big growth our organization had last year. The document is available in Wikimedia Commons, and will soon be out of print as well. We will send a copy to each fellow. We are also looking forward to translating the report to English in the weeks to come. It is thanks to the commitment of all the volunteers that our chapter has managed to get so far. We hope that they continue walking by our side in the projects to come.
