Abstract:
In an era where disinformation increasingly undermines scholarly and public trust in information, the ability to trace and correct falsehoods is critical. This session introduces Citation Genealogy Analysis (CGA), a novel method that leverages network analysis to track the origins and spread of contested information within academic literature and digital platforms. Using a case study from art history, I will demonstrate how CGA can uncover the genealogy of a widely debated iconological theory and reveal how uncritical citation practices contribute to the persistence of misinformation.
This session will specifically relate to the conference theme by addressing the role that librarians, Wikimedians, and information professionals can play in identifying, analyzing, and counteracting disinformation in academic and digital domains.
