Abstract:
Wikipedia is an antidote to disinformation, both online and offline. Because of its community-led model, and its focus on sources, Wikipedia has been identified time and again as a critical node in the information ecosystem, contributing to its overall reliability. Each month, Wikipedia is visited more than 15 billion times by people who are looking for information they can trust.

Libraries are another essential infrastructure for knowledge integrity, with approximately 3 million institutions around the world helping people find and evaluate information.

In this workshop, we will consider how the Wikimedia movement and libraries can collaborate to positively influence the information ecosystem and support readers, researchers, and editors to resist disinformation.

Our speakers will:

  • Provide a 101 understanding of disinformation (theory and context)
  • Consider how Wikipedia is connected to other nodes in the information ecosystem
  • Evaluate what elements of Wikipedia’s community model lead to positive information, and which ones introduce risk
  • Consider how AI technologies open a new set of challenges in the area of disinformation

We will then split into smaller groups to respond to a series of disinformation scenarios.

(We’re seeking to have this session recognized by a relevant professional body so it counts as professional development for librarians.)
