Wikimania 2022/Scholarships/Wikimedia Ghana User Group/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Wikimedia Ghana User Group sought to offer its members and other Ghanaian Wikimedians access to scholarships to participate fully in the Wikimania 2022 activities. This is the second year we have offered scholarships to our members, and we took some of the learnings from last year into account when administering this year's scholarship process. In terms of giving data scholarships, we exceeded the goal we set for ourselves and all the participants who accessed it were excited.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
40 participants to receive data stipends to participate in Wikimania virtually 48 participants received data stipends to participate in Wikimania We exceeded our number by 8 because we received more people and we couldn't turn them down. And this time we had people from other user groups coming to us for data stipends to attend Wikimania.
1 Post-Wikimania Event Organized 1 Post-Wikimania event and one other satellite event at the Ghana Institute of Journalism We hosted 1 Post-Wikimania event as stated and had 11 people join us in-person and about 11 people joining us online at a point during the event. We also had an opportunity to be invited by the Ghana Institute of Journalism to introduce the women to Wikipedia editing and Wikimania through their Women's Week celebrations.
5 Hardware and Childcare Support 3 Hardware and 1 childcare support In all we had hardware support for 3 of the participants and then 1 person asked for childcare services.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. One of the learnings from last year we corrected this year was sending scholarship recipients the money for the data and letting them purchase it themselves helped a lot of the participants purchase their data bundles on time.
  2. This year showed an increased interest in scholarship recipients across our regions. We also had many such participants outside Accra from the Northern Ghana Region.
  3. We had a community that trusted us by giving them an informative Post-Wikimania workshop and were willing to go all out to ensure we were successful.
  4. Over 96% of the people who filled out our post-Wikimania survey said the data scholarship serve the purpose it was intended to serve during the virtual Wikimania.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Our Wikimania gift arrived so late, so we couldn't give it to participants during our post-Wikimania event.
  2. A lot of the data scholarship recipient followers complain about challenges with the Mobile Application use for the virtual Wikimania.
