Description
[edit]The small town of Santa Leopoldina is the fourth oldest city in the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo. Located in a mountain region, it has a rich amount of natural and built heritage and it is part of important tourist routes. Furthermore, it was settled by immigrants from various european countries (Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, German, Italy, Netherlands, i.e.) and the local residents still keep their cultures alive. Despite having great importance in terms of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, this small territory is very underrepresented on the Internet.
The WMB user group will promote one of its Wiki Takes events in the city; These events aims to engage volunteers from the Wikimedia movement and local residents and partners to contribute their knowledge and expertise to improve regionally-focused content on collaborative knowledge platforms. With the help of the volunteers, newcomer participants will be trained on how to contribute and improve content to different Wikimedia projects (MS#12). To achieve this, Wiki Ocupa Santa Leopoldina will include activities such as (1) Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata workshops; (2) Photowalks; (3) Uploading of collections; and (4) Digital mapping. In parallel, we will have rooms reserved to watch Wikimania sessions in addition to Wikimania sessions presented directly from Santa Leopoldina. As a pre-event action, WMB and Museu do Colono (Immigrant Museum), a museum in the city, are working on a GLAM-Wiki partnership that will upload the museum's collection and also invite cultural associations to contribute with private photos and documents. These activities are intended to help reduce the gap of information about the immigrants who have chosen Santa Leopoldina as their new home and other topics related to the city (MS#37).
We want to integrate this event with Wikimania because this is an unique opportunity for newcomers to be introduced into the Wikimedia universe in a fun way (MS#11) and to testify the wide and strong commitment of the global Wikimedia community (MS#3); The discussions and sharing and learning experiences with other communities, especially the LATAM chapters and user groups panel, are expected to further strengthen the engagement and promote partnerships among affiliates and individuals (MS#25). Participants will be asked to provide experience reports on the Wikimania festival and will be incentivized to participate in more wiki activities.
