I SPENT THE SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS ON DATA AND ALSO GOT SMALL HARDWARE DEVICES FOR THE EVENT

There were lots of sessions during the event. Some of the topics talked about in different sessions are:

1. WIKIPEDIA EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP This occurs when two parties come together for the common welfare of an institution or to improve student learning. This partnership can be done with schools, colleges or universities. In other enhance student learning and quality based education; Wikipedia collaborates with the above institutes. In Wikipedia, Education partnership entails: Cooperation, Collaboration and Communication with education agencies.

GOALS OF EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP

◆Generating, analyzing and sharing successful collaboration strategies.

◆Improving the instruction of instructors and educators training projects to encourage more community involvement.

◆Leading exploration on local area organizations and best practices.

In Wikipedia’s partnership with different educational institutions, they teach children on how to learn and conduct research, teach them to differentiate facts from fiction. They also help teachers, students to make use of different Wikipedia projects to aid their learning. Some of these projects include: Promoting knowledge, Equity, Teaching 24th century skill, Reading Wikipedia which is one of the effective projects of Wikimedia where trainings, workshop, seminars and conferences are organized both for teachers and students.

Furthermore, understanding how information is produced, how to evaluate and access contents online and how to understand biases and knowledge gaps in the information they consume are among the various topics covered in these seminars and conferences organized by Wikipedia.

The benefits of this project for students include:

◆They learn the basis of copyright and free licence.

◆It strengthens critical thinking.

◆They cultivate the ability of producer of knowledge.

◆They also learn about the online environment.

◆Development of collaboration skills.

◆Developing basic skills of reading and writing and many more…

In the same vain teachers also have a lot to gain from these projects which include:

◆ Learning positive learning experience.

◆ Building closer relationship with students

◆ Improving teaching skills

◆ Updating their knowledge etc

THE WEST AFRICA COOK OUT SESSION IS ANOTHER SESSION DURING THE EVENT.

The country of focus in West Africa discussed in this session was Nigeria. I learnt that Nigeria is a country with diverse cultures, people, dishes and history. There are lots of cuisines in Nigeria. However the most popular of them all is the Nigeria Jollof. This is a delicious meal that is peculiar in taste and is loved by many Nigerians as it is always the first in the food menu of various occasions in the country.

Chef Ayodele, a Nigerian chef put us through the preparation of this meal (Nigerian Jollof rice). Some of the ingredients he used in the preparation include:

◆ Rice

◆ Food seasoning

◆ Pepper

◆ Onion

◆ Garlic and Ginger

◆ Vegetable oil.

Chef Ayodele also gave us the nutritional value of the Nigerian Jollof rice which include:

◆ calories- 130

◆ water- 69%

◆ Protein- 2.4grams

◆ Carbohydrate- 28.7grams

◆ fats- 0.2grams

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES USING WIKIMEDIA PROJECTS: REVISITING THE GREEN WIKI CAMPAIGN.

This session was led by Omorodion Okuonghae and Jeremiah Ugwulebo. They talked about issues concerning the climate which are now important issues in the world today and several actions and attention are veered towards climate change.

Omorodin Okuonghe began with the definition of what Climate Change is. He said that according to the Amnesty International, 2022, Climate Change involves the rise in temperature and other extreme weather events, leading to rising sea levels, shifting wildlife populations and habitats and a range of other impacts. The United Nation also defined climate change as a long term shifts in temperature and weather pattern.

CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE.

There is the Human induce climate change which includes:

◆ Greenhouse gas emission resulting from burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas)

◆ Deforestation or cutting down of forest.

◆ Manufacturing goods- for making cement, iron, plastics etc.

◆ Transportation.

◆ Food production.

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

◆ Hotter temperature

◆ Increased wildfire

◆ More severe storms as a result of increase in extreme rainfall and flooding

◆ Loss of species.

◆ Insufficient food or reduced supplier of food.

◆ Health risks resulting from increased temperature

Jeremiah Ugwulebo talked about how we can save the planet and how Wikipedia can be involved in saving the planet. He said Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are the main ways we can save our planet. Wikipedia on the other hand plays a role in combating climate change some of the roles we play or can play include:

◆ Creating public awareness of climate change issues through Wikipedia.

◆ Documenting important climate related data using wiki data, wiki quotes

◆ Volunteering to join wiki related groups and campaigns that are focused on climate change

How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?

I CONNECTED WITH OTHER PEOPLE DURING WIKIMANIA BY LEARNING MORE ABOUT THEIR CULTURE. FOR EXAMPLE I GOT TO KNOW SOME FACTS ABOUT KENYA AND NIGERIA. ALSO THE ENTERTAINMENT SESSIONS IN THE EVENT WERE SO FASCINATING AND I WAS THRILLED BY THE VARIOUS PERFORMANCES OF INDIVIDUALS.
