How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I attended this year's Wikimania(my first Wikimania) virtually by joining some of the sessions that were held virtually.

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?

I spent part of the money in getting data for an internet connection and upgrading my device specification to something faster. I also got some basic gadgets to participate in an online session such as an earpiece, a wireless keyboard, and a mouse. I plan to use the remaining fund to get a small audio interface and participate in the sound logo contest.

Checking my list now, the 3 Wikimania sessions I learned a lot from are:

1. Implementation lightning talks which was coordinated by Yop Rwang Pam. The virtual event came up on the first day of Wikimania. During the talk, Toni Ristovski (Shared Knowledge), Ivana Madžarević (Wikimedia Serbia), and Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska from Wikimedia Polska shared the project they were working on which was a part of the Movement strategy (this was one of the first places I learned about the Wikimedia's Movement Strategy and what it meant). I learned about some of the challenges they faced and how they were able to solve some of them. it was an eye-opener for me being a newcomer in the space.

2. Wiki Loves Monuments by Krishna Chaitanya Velanga. From this session, I got some understanding of what Wiki Loves Monuments is. I also was able to learn the basics of a tool called Montage(which is a photo evaluation tool for the Wiki Loves competition). Towards the end of the session, questions were asked and I learned from them as they were similar to the question I had regarding the topic. For example, one of the questions asked was (I will rephrase the question though) if a person or a group of volunteers can organize Wiki Love Monuments if the local chapter does not have the bandwidth to support which the speaker duly answered.

3. Wikimedia Sound Logo Production Masterclass by Joe Bush, and Emma Byford: This was one of the sessions I quite like and I volunteered for to help vet some of the submissions for the Sound logo contest. Although there were some technical issues during the sessions, I was able to grasp what the organizers were trying to pass across. Things that were discussed include what a sound log is, the basic rudiment of music such as tempo, etc, and how to create a sound logo. The session was a great one and I learned a lot regarding sound pertaining to the Wiki projects.

How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?

I joined break-out sessions and other waiting rooms on PheedLoop where I connected with other participants from other parts of the world and get to learn from their wealth of knowledge. Particularly for me, I got to ask Mr. Aklapper which programming language is best to learn to contribute to Wiki projects cause I use a language not commonly used in the Wiki project. Currently, I'm learning some of the recommended languages such as Javascript, HTML and CSS to start my contribution in the Wiki projects on GitHub.
