How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I attended Wikimania both virtually(Pheedloop, Youtube) and in person(Open Foundation West Africa Accra(OFWA) chapter meeting).

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?

I used the funds I received for the purchase of a wifi device, transportation to the local Wikimania event, meals and data bundles.

Takeaways – choose 3 specific Wikimania sessions you attended and describe your key takeaways per session.

1. Digital Security Basics by Konstantin Urbanec: In this era, it is essential to protect our data and there are so many ways of protecting credentials and ways in which we can lose our privacy. The latter can happen through: Social engineering, Phishing or your password can be cracked by a computer really easily. I got to understand these digital securities more and how to protect myself through password managers, 2FA(Two Factor Authentication or validating my passwords with password validating sites.

2. Wiki Loves Monuments by Krishna Velaga: I got to learn about the Annual Global Photo Barrier competition which happens in September and October where everyone can share(photos) in the sum of all built cultural heritage. This movement highlights three main things:

  • Freely documenting and raising awareness of the built cultural heritage.
  • Increasing contributions to Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons.
  • Strengthening local Wikimedia communities. I also learned the process and the kinds of monuments I can contribute to.

3. Educational Partnerships: I learned about Wikimedia partnerships which include Cooperation, Collaboration and Communication with institutions such as schools, colleges and universities to ensure quality-based education. Through reading Wikipedia in classrooms, pupils get to understand how info is produced, access content, and evaluate and understand that there may be or are some biases in the knowledge they consume. Teachers are not left out; they benefit from Wikipedia by having a closer relationship with their students, increasing their knowledge and improving their teaching skills.

How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?
  • Through the chat on Pheedloop, especially during the sessions.
  • During the in-person event for Wikimedians at the OFWA's office in Accra. It was a great experience and I learned about the history of Wikipedia, and Wiki Movement Strategy.

Also, we played games such as pick and act using the information we learned from the movement such as IP block, edit source, edit history, Infobox etc and I won. I met old friends and made new ones.
