Wikidata for Nigerian Resources, NLA Bayelsa State Chapter/Impact

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Collaborate - Innovate - Excel

This event marked a significant milestone as the first Wiki event for Librarians in Bayelsa. It served as an enlightening experience, as librarians were keen on enhancing visibility for researchers and Nigerian content on Wikidata.

Being the inaugural event, it featured a wide array of activities and discussions, covering topics such as account creation, Wikimedia Foundation, policies, terms of use, Wikidata, editing techniques, batch uploading tools, and more.

Challenges and ways forward

[edit]
  1. Limited time for training and editing: As first-time participants in a Wiki training, there was a lot to cover in a short time. To address this challenge in the future, we plan to encourage participants to create accounts and other preps in advance of the event date.
  2. Connectivity issues: Some participants faced connectivity problems, hindering their ability to engage in practical activities. To tackle this challenge, we aim to provide network routers in the future. In some instances, participants encountered issues when multiple users shared the same IP address from a router.
  3. Wiki editing skills: Participants lacked the technical expertise required to navigate Wiki projects effectively, given their limited editing experience. To address this issue in the future, events like this will be allocated a longer timeframe to allow for more comprehensive training and practice. Editing and training within a few hours are often insufficient

For sustainability, organizers hope to have another event as a continuation and a form of follow up of the previous event.
