The Wiki Loves Onam campaign is an initiative that aims to capture and celebrate the essence of the vibrant and culturally significant festivals associated with Onam in Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Commons, Wikidata, Wikibooks).
Onam is a major harvest festival celebrated every year in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The festival holds great cultural and traditional significance, and the Wiki Loves Onam campaign seeks to document and share this joy of the festival with the world. Onam is mainly celebrated in Kerala and certain global regions with Kerala residents, the campaign aims to engage participants from all around the world. This broader participation enriches the content with diverse perspectives, cross-cultural comparisons, and a global understanding about the festival.
The campaign plans to document information ranges from the historical significance of the festival, encourages participants to capture high-quality images of various aspects of Onam celebrations, arts and dishes, creation of new Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikidata articles and the improvement of existing ones related to Onam.
Campaign Objectives

- Engagement and Participation: The campaign encourages active engagement and participation from Wikipedia contributors, photographers, researchers, and enthusiasts to create and improve the information in Wikimedia ecosystem. By contributing content and collaborating, participants foster a sense of community around the celebration of Onam.
- Open Knowledge Sharing: Wiki Loves Onam aligns with the principles of open knowledge sharing and free access to information. All contributions are licensed under open licenses, making the content freely available for educational and informational purposes.
- Cultural Preservation: The campaign plans to preserve and document aspects such as decorations, rituals, food, traditional attire, dance performances, and other cultural activities related to the Onam festival. This includes capturing images, information, and knowledge related to the festival's history, traditions, and celebrations.
- Improvement of Existing Information: The campaign aims to enhance the quality and accuracy of existing information about Onam on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikibooks, Wikimedia commons. - In 2023 we have done a new pilot initiative that aims to capture and celebrate the Onam by enriching the informations in more Wikimedia projects.
