Wiki In Africa is a South African-based NGO that initiates and manages knowledge contribution programs across Africa and beyond. The most notable of these are Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Women (including the Focus Group, SheSaid, and Inspiring Open), WikiAfrica Hour, WikiChallenge Ecoles d’Afrique, and WikiFundi. There are additional drives, associated projects, and Wikimedia movement campaigns that we proudly create, support, and take part in.  

2024 will be the 7th year since Wiki In Africa was officially registered, although some of the projects are now in their 10th year of activation.

Wiki In Africa Paid Position: Translator : CLOSED

Wiki In Africa is looking for an English / French translator to support Wiki in Africa throughout 2024 (and beyond). This person must have experience within the Wikimedia community. The winning applicant will be hired as a preferred service provider to work across multiple projects. The position is entirely remote.

Successful applicants should expect to provide translation from English language (source) into French language in the following situations (by order of likelihood):

  • translation of content on wiki pages (in particular on Meta and on Commons)
  • translation of content directly on documents (such as press releases, newsletters, reports, social media posts, etc.)
  • translation of webpages (such as on Wiki in Africa websites hosted on WordPress)
  • provide occasional live interpretation support, such as meetings and webinars, ensuring accurate and timely communication between participants in real-time.
  • subtitling of videos
  • transcription of french videos or audio
  • translation of visuals (hosted on Canva)
  • etc.

Translation tasks are expected to range between 1 to 20 hours per week. Payment will be based on an agreed hourly rate. Working schedule is largely flexible (as long as deadlines are respected and occasional coordination meetings attended).

Eligibility
  • Candidates should be gender-sensitive and live on or be from the African continent. We will accept candidates from outside Africa as long as they have direct and recent African experience.
  • This is a remote, service opportunity to be conducted from the successful candidate’s place of residence or an alternative space. As such, they are expected to have the correct visa or work permit to reside in the country they will be working from Wiki In Africa will not facilitate the application of visas or work permits or the transition from one country to another.

Wiki In Africa: Program Facilitator 2024 : CLOSED

We are looking for a multi-skilled program facilitator to support Wiki in Africa throughout 2024 (and beyond) who has experience in, and is excited, by communicating to the Wikimedia community through live broadcasting and campaigns, and also has a passion for Wikipedia in education. This person should have experience within the Wikimedia community. The position is entirely remote.

The role

The position involves two roles:

  1. Live Broadcast Facilitator
  2. Lead Ambassador for WikiAfrica Tools

All tasks are expected to be conducted over approximately 20 hours per week or 0.5 FTE.
Successful applicants should expect to manage the following tasks associated with each of the projects:

Role 1: Live Broadcast Facilitator (10 hours per week or 0.25 FTE)
In the Live Broadcast role, the program facilitator will be tasked with the production of Wiki In Africa’s successful WikiAfrica Hour vodcast. Additional exciting tasks include researching, planning, and instigating new channels for existing and future content.

Operations: Live Broadcast Production
The Contractor will:
  • Produce WikiAfrica Hour, the monthly live webcast (including special events and launches) throughout the year.
  • Communicate effectively with Wikimedians about upcoming shows – on-wiki and off-wiki and via social media
  • Collaboratively research, develop, and implement extensions of the live broadcasting format, more efficient delivery of the Newscasts, and the use of its archival content via other communications channels.
Analysis: Project Impact Reports
The Contractor will:
  • Compile metrics and analytics, feedback and surveys, and monthly reports to the WIA team.
  • Compile an end-of-the-year “Results and best practices” and an internal report for internal evaluation and the overall WIA activity report.


Role 2: Lead Ambassador for WikiAfrica Tools (10 hours per week or 0.25 FTE)
This role involves being the general lead ambassador for two of Wiki In Africa’s technology tools: WikiFundi and the ISA Tool.

The Lead Ambassador role involves
The contractor providing:
  • Visibility through up-to-date and relevant communications outreach and promotion through both on-Wiki and off-Wiki channels
  • Training or office hour sessions to facilitate the effective use of both tools
  • Compile impact data through metrics, analytics, usage reports and surveys
The ISA Tool tasks will involve:
  • Working with the Wiki In Africa team to support the success of internal (Wiki In Africa) and external ISA Tool campaigns.
  • Encouraging and supporting the Wikimedia Community’s use of the ISA Tool to run campaigns.
  • Monitor the ISA Tool health and liaise with tech development to fix bugs, and
  • Improving the accessibility of the tool through community drives for key improvements, such as translations.
WikiFundi tasks will involve:
  • Implementing, facilitating, and supporting an ambassador network for WikiFundi,
  • Researching the offline and education landscape across Africa for strategic partnerships and opportunities, and
  • Providing effective communications across on-Wiki and off-Wiki spaces.

Context Wiki Loves Africa

Now in its 9th year, Wiki Loves Africa is one of the largest photography and media contests on the African continent. It is run across the whole continent, however, some specific actions (training, communication etc.) are held in some countries with national organisers. The theme for the 2023 Wiki Loves Africa is Climate and Weather.

Wiki Loves Africa has achieved much over 8 years:

  • Over 88,640 images collected
  • 10,380 unique submitters
  • Images viewed 1,044,490,672 times altogether (June 2022)
  • 337+ events in 26 African countries
  • Submitted images viewed 25,072,328 times each month (June 2022);
  • 80%+ of competitors are newbies;
  • A Wiki Loves Africa winning image was included in the Journeys Through Our Fragile Heritage exhibition at the UNESCO, Paris; and
  • Wiki Loves Africa’s ISA tool is the Winner of the Best Multimedia Tool Prize at WikiData Conference 2019

The role

We are looking for a Wiki Loves Africa Facilitator to heighten awareness of, support during, and participation in the Wiki Loves Africa contest and related activities. The Wiki Loves Africa Facilitator will manage and coordinate the project throughout 2023. This includes the creation and development of vital, relevant and timely information about this flagship project to facilitate the involvement of, and provide opportunities for, the larger photographic, media and Wikimedian communities across Africa.
The facilitator will provide support to WIA global organisers with the organisation of the contest itself. They will provide support to local organisers and competitors during the contest. Finally, they will engage with the communities for year-round engagement and training to support and grow the Wiki Loves Africa related activities. Specifically, the Wiki Loves Africa Facilitator will focus on engagement with Africa’s photographic, media and Wikimedia community and improve access to opportunities and skills development.

We are looking for a person who has experience within the Wikimedia community, significant participation experience, and a passion for photography and other media. The position is entirely remote.

Responsibilities may include, but are not be limited to, the following:

- Administrative and project management assistance for Wiki Loves Africa 2023 contest and associated projects throughout 2023. This includes (but is not limited to) timeline and task management and implementation, community engagement (organisers and photographers), skills building, online events, jury process facilitation and report writing.

- On-Wiki and photographer communications and events to focus awareness, and build understanding and skills towards quality contributions over the longterm. This includes (but is not limited to) masterclass and webinar planning, database management, collaborations on campaigns, awareness of opportunitie and community engagement.

- Community awareness to support organiser participation in Wiki Loves Africa by ensuring visibility on community channels. This includes (but is not limited to) communication, alerts, content production,and  community empowerment and engagement.

- Community health monitoring (in line with UCoC) through feedback meeting, polls and surveys, metrics assessments, documentation and reports.
