WikiUganda Community Engagement Meeting

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Background

[edit]
  • The Wikimedia Community User-group Uganda has held annual planning meetings to prepare, grant applications, and make annual plans. The annual general meetings have been attended by the Core user-group volunteers first in 2019, and consequently inviting other active community members. The involvement of community members in the annual Planning meetings and discussion of the simple annual grant activities has happened on two occasions in 2020, and 2021.
  • In order to have more input and community involvement in developing future grant applications, the user-group is carrying out community engagement meetings/sessions to sensitize, and have community members prepare for a pro-active role in coming up with future annual plans. Below are the discussion points, and outcomes of the first community engagement meeting.

[edit]
No Topic Feedback Wayforward
1 Community Engagement
  • Proposal was made to make the community engagement bi-annual, for utmost participation, rather than participating in pre-determined projects.
  • A suggestion was made for the Usergroup to showcase activities at public events, information days/sessions, and on social media.
  • Community members were advised to propose activities from Wikimedia events that they have attended, for example Wikimania or WikiIndaba.
  • The next community engagement meeting will be communicated by the Usergroup.
2 Education
  • South Sudan members expressed interest in collaboration on an Education Project.
  • There are secondary schools that needed such training opportunities that the User-group is providing.
  • Categories for Luganda Wikipedia are needed.
  • Project Lead and Administrator will follow up with this.
3 GLAM
  • Patience, mentorship, and collaboration can help volunteer editors become good at what they are doing.
  • More Usergroup training sessions will be organised.
4 Diversity and content generation
  • South Sudan members requested for support on campaigns' Jury members.
  • Partnerships were proposed with Photography companies.
  • There's a need to motivate editors whose content or articles have been rejected.
  • Project Lead and Administrator will follow up with this.
5 Strategic plan
  • The Strategic process will be used for continuous engagement of volunteers.
  • Usergroup volunteers will be informed and further engaged during the advanced stages of the Strategy process.
6 Social activity
  • There will be more online or similar community engagement of more Usergroup volunteers.
  • User-group members will participate in User-group activities with a better/informed point of view.
