WikiTech/old
The idea for this project is a place for all tech info, from news to howto's, virus and spyware threats, ect.
Ideas
[edit]I think that to focus the project, a name like WikiDIY or WikiMake (not to rip off the terrific folks at Make Magazine) would be good. Focus on end user hacking, hardware repair and maintenance, software support, as well as things like network security how-tos. --The silentist 22:16, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Your Thoughts
[edit]I have long wished for a project like this. The best way to do it, I think, would be to make it as sort of a sub-project of Wikipedia - similar to Wikispecies, except this would likely be a lot more popular and useful. - TalkHard 07:34, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

- Tech info can go in Wikipedia. News can go in Wikinews. Howtos can go in Wikibooks or at Wikicities:c:Howto. Virus info can go at Wikicities:c:Virus. Is there a need for another project for any of this? Angela 06:43, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I think there is. What about DIY stuff, or How-to stuff that goes much more in-depth. For example, info on how to tune my vintage Fender Rhodes piano doesn't belong at the Rhodes Piano entry on Wikipedia, or does it? Another example - how to replace an iPod battery, which is currently linked to from the iPod entry. A place where this tech info is organized, peer-reviewed, and under a free license is a really valuable concept. For both software and hardware. Currently lots of this is spread around niche sites, or in long messageboard threads, etc. I'd be very interested in helping. --The silentist 21:26, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- There's also the Do it Yourself Wikicity. In general, it's a good idea to start an open content project and Wikicities and see if you can develop into a larger community. There are close ties between Wikicities and Wikimedia, and if it can be successful there, it may eventually become an official Wikimedia project.--Eloquence 23:16, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- That wikicity does not seem to be populated. Should I attempt to revive it? --The silentist 23:48, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, that's perfectly fine. Wikicities are often abandoned and repurposed by others.--Eloquence 00:02, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I think the lack of a DIY project on wiki is regretable. till today the wikicities is not populated. I think the cross-referencing to wikipedia/wikimedia would suffice as a motivation to have a tech/diy project. --Maroxelois 15:02, 10 Oct 2005 (CET)
FWIW, http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/ uses MediaWiki and seems to be in sync with this idea. It's limited to Linux, but it'd make an excellent place to put Linux DIY, IMO. Dual licensing -- CC or GFDL -- so easy to port content to a more general purpose location if WikiTech gets off the ground. <>< tbc 17:02, 2 September 2005 (UTC)
I honestly think that just about everything mentioned above can go into a WikiBook on that specific subject. Odd bloke 00:36, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
