WikiProject Mapping Gravestones
Welcome! We are trying to map the gravesite of every notable person that passed away and has a page on Wikidata.
What we do
[edit]WikiProject Mapping Gravestones (Serbian: Viki voli velikane) represents a project of geolocating burial sites of notable persons buried around the world. The idea of this campaign came up during Wikimania in 2016, when alternative contests were thought of in regards to Wiki loves Monuments, where it was only mentioned as one of many potential options.
The development was started by Mickey Mystique in the end of 2018, after the website graves.wiki was created, and eventually stopped working. However, thanks to Dungodung's enthusiasm, the website is up again on graves.toolforge.org.
The goal is to participate in multiple projects and combine the available resources. We aim to combine all the accessible information on Wikipedia, images on Wikimedia Commons and data on Wikidata.
Activities:
- Find article of deceased person in your area
- Check if there is any information on the location of their burial place
- See if Wikimedia Commons contains any photos of their gravesite
- Take photos yourself, upload them on Commons and add them in the appropriate category
- Find the person's Wikidata item
- Add statement with property place of burial (P119) with the name of the cemetery/location/building, and add qualifier coordinate location with data in WGS84 coordinate system
- Add statement with property image of grave (P1442) with the name of the file as it is shown on Commons (for example: filename:jpg)
- Check the Graves Map and try to find the notable person you've just added
- Rejoice!
