WikiMuir
[edit]WikiMuir is a collaborative project focused on the maritime heritage, folklore, and conservation efforts of Irish and Scottish Gaelic-speaking communities. The project is supported by the Colmcille Small Grant Scheme, awarded by Foras na Gaeilge. This initiative aims to strengthen connections between Irish and Scottish Gaelic speakers through digital knowledge-sharing, cultural exchanges, and community-driven Wikimedia projects.
Project Overview
[edit]The goal of WikiMuir is to document and celebrate shared maritime traditions, language, and biodiversity between Ireland and Scotland. This will be achieved through:
- Bilingual Digital Resources: Expanding content on Vicipéid (Irish Wikipedia), Uicipeid (Scottish Gaelic Wikipedia), and Wikimedia Commons.
- Community Workshops: Hosting cultural exchange visits, training sessions, and a Wikithon event to teach participants how to edit and contribute to Wikimedia projects.
- Multimedia Storytelling: Capturing and sharing folklore, oral history, and conservation knowledge in Irish and Scottish Gaelic.
The project also aligns with Wiki Loves Folklore, Wiki Loves Earth, and Wiki Science Competition, encouraging contributions in minority languages about maritime heritage, climate, and environmental sustainability.
Project Partners

Each partner contributes expertise in Wikimedia engagement, cultural heritage, and language preservation.
Colmcille Small Grant
[edit]WikiMuir was awarded funding through the Colmcille Small Grant Scheme, which is administered by Foras na Gaeilge. This funding supports the establishment of the partnership and initial project development, with plans to apply for further funding in 2025.
