Meeting Notes
[edit]Notes (First Meeting)
[edit]Status update on in-progress articles from each journal
- Article tracking update WJM:
- colleagues are encouraged to visit the Tracking Sheet (last updated 7 September 2023) to see if they can help as handling editors or reviewers. At the moment we have 11 articles pending. Some of these have been with us a long time and some appear to be moribund. At the end of this month I will start a process of closing down any article where the author is not responsive; we need to decide if they remain as pre-prints or if they are removed from the site.
- Preprints
- Eventually liability potentially especially when sister project proposal comes through
- WJS update
- About 5 new submissions since June. All require handling editors
- WJH Update
- 2 outstanding editor applications (Sci and Med board members can comment)
- If successful, the 3 individuals will manage and reduce the backlog of submissions
Coordinating articles
- you may be coordinating articles not in your field since we rely heavily on peer reviewers’ comments
- This should be explicitly mentioned in the application page to manage expectations
- Continue to send reminder emails about submissions needing handling editors until someone takes it (or is assigned to it)
WorkMarket Update
- Can the tasks be put back as completed
- Tech editor says easy to use and understand
Technical Editors Update
- Email to see
Wikimania Update
- Raised concern to WMF CEO that sister project proposal was submitted in 2019 - No easy formal mechanism to elevate sister project without board member
- WMF developing a consultative process to formalize the addition of sister projects
- Probably on a 2-year timeline
- There is a concern that some of the existing sister projects is stale and foundation would like to address these projects first (outreach, before adding new projects)
- Funding may be impacted by having regional hubs
- Stickers are a big hit - More for wikiconference NA - look at design about the location of the QR code
New Board meeting date and time
- Grant Application: Ellen is on it, but will shoot us an e-mail if she requires assistance between now and Tuesday
- Budget forecast
Spending allocated funding
- Andrew received formal invitation to present WikiJournal in Colombia universities through Wikimedia Colombia chapter.
Would like to see if there is funding available within WikiJournal (Colombia chapter will pay for hotel). Potentially more and diversifying funding source for us as chapters want to fund open access publishing for their researchers
Notes (Second Meeting)
[edit]Status update on in-progress articles from each journal WorkMarket Update
- Both need on-wiki edit to mark completed as well as editor that claimed at the start
- Ellen will raise with workmarket
- As default, wait 48 hrs after a task goes up for tech editors to have the opportunity to sign up before assigning which editor.
Technical Editors Update Wikimania Update
- Publisher vs platform - need to be clear on description (currently doing well)
- WikiJournal user group would be a main user of a sister project but not sole user if sister project
- Wikinews sets some precedent within WMF (e.g. They used to issue press passess), but WikiJournal user group has a lot more ‘formal’ registrations as a publisher
- Some confusion about our name. Some delegates think we are a news organization
- WikiJournals name is getting out more but still unknown some - large potential for outreach in Chapters (english speaking first then non-english)
- Speaking with EduWiki
- Run courses for academic professionals in wiki editing (mention wikijournal in the course but potentially could have a sub module)
- It may be worthwhile writing another formal letter to the board to give an update to state of WikiJournal
- Our project will support creating new knowledge, not just documenting existing knowledge on Wikipedia or retrieving existing information through AI or language models
- This will support WMF and keep its projects relevant 5-20 years down the road
- Fiscal Sponsors - Ellen Look into
- Charities that help other charities
- Insurance? Contacts?
- Perhaps Eric Youngstrom has some leads or ideas
New Board meeting date and time Grant Application
- Budget
