Of the 90million women in Nigeria, only 1500 are on Wikipedia. Not only that, 1 in 10 Wikipedia contributors in Nigeria are female. When we look at the media content on women, we see that there is great need for better presentation and profiling of African women, particularly Nigerian women. The visibility Project aims to address the under-representation of Nigerian women on Wikipedia. It also seeks to improve the profiles of Nigerian women on Wikipedia by supporting journalists and media content producers in the coverage and profiling of women. Furthermore, a nation wide initiative will be organised with the aim of identifying and training female contributors and journalists. The initiative will provide hands on training in writing in encyclopaedic tones, and will focus specially on women working in the fields of technology, security and media in Africa. The visibility Project is a collaborative project between the African Women in Media (AWIM) and Wikimedia Nigeria. It fits into AWIM’s objective of showcasing the works and stories of successful women in order to inspire other women, hence the motto ‘Be Visible To Inspire.’ It is also in line with the AU's gender strategy for Agenda 2063 that seeks more visibility for women and girls as equal contributors to society in the ‘Media, literature and cultural resources.’
